On October 24, the government of the Italian city of Venice announced that it will continue to apply a daily fee policy for tourists visiting this city in 2025.

The decision was made after a trial phase of the toll collection policy last April showed positive results.

Known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world and recognized as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Venice is always a top tourist destination for many visitors.

However, this "floating city" is facing pressure from tourist overload, causing UNESCO to recommend putting this site on the list of endangered world heritage sites.

Venice has been testing an entrance fee for non-stay visitors since April this year. Each visitor must buy a ticket for 5 euros per person.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the fee will be applied for 29 days this year, mainly on weekends and holidays. However, the government plans to increase the number of days to 54 next year, starting April 18, 2025.

Under the new plan, visitors who book at least four days in advance will still have to pay a 5 euro fee, while those who book closer to the date will have to pay 10 euros per person. Meanwhile, local residents will still be able to enter for free by showing their ID cards.

Mayor Brugnaro said the initiative was a “first step” towards better managing tourist flows, avoiding overcrowding on peak days and encouraging visitors to choose less crowded times to experience this unique city to the fullest.

However, this decision has also met with mixed opinions. Some people believe that this policy is not enough to deter tourists, seeing it as a hasty reaction to UNESCO's warnings.
