Ms Ellis, 38, admitted to helping issue false statements and documents. Prosecutors allege she attended a meeting with Georgia lawmakers where former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani made false claims about election irregularities. The meeting was aimed at persuading lawmakers to refuse to recognize Mr Joe Biden’s victory in the state.
Speaking in court, the defendant admitted that she failed to do her job in checking the false claims of the former White House's lawyers about election fraud. "I look back on this entire experience with deep regret," Ms. Ellis said. Under the plea agreement, Ms. Ellis could face up to five years of house arrest and $5,000 in restitution.
Mr Trump has been indicted but pleaded not guilty. It is one of four criminal cases involving him.
