Ho Chi Minh City: A 21-year-old girl had back and waist pain. The doctor discovered she had a herniated disc due to incorrect gym exercises.
On May 19, Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Head of the musculoskeletal correction unit, Hospital 1A, said that the patient came to the clinic with severe pain in the lumbar region, spreading to the buttocks and both legs, numbness in both legs, more pain when bending forward, unable to sit for long periods of time and participate in sports .
The patient said he had been working out at the gym for over a year, and recently felt back pain after lifting weights. He went to a hospital and was diagnosed with a herniated disc but did not receive treatment.
At Hospital 1A, the doctor concluded that the patient's pelvis was rotated forward, the hips were misaligned, and the physiological curve of the cervical and lumbar spine had changed. After three sessions of musculoskeletal adjustment, the patient's condition improved, he could sit with less pain and fatigue, and his daily activities were easier and he had more energy.
Dr. Trinh said statistics show that herniated discs often appear in middle-aged people due to the aging process and degeneration after long periods of work, overwork, and heavy lifting, leading to damage to the discs and spine.
Nowadays, the age of patients with herniated disc is very young due to the changing trend of work and living habits such as office work, using computers, phones, sitting a lot, standing a lot, long-term bad posture habits and laziness.
According to Dr. Trinh, exercise at a moderate level, properly and with a balanced exercise regimen. Excessive, continuous and incorrect exercise leads to disc herniation.
