Thomas Tuchel becomes England head coach

According to Sky Sports, the English Football Association has reached an agreement with Thomas Tuchel, preparing to announce the successful appointment of the former Chelsea coach today, October 16. The British newspaper said that Tuchel's side has agreed to a contract to lead the Three Lions for a term of 18 months. He will work starting from January 1, 2025.

Coach Lee Carsley will accompany the England team in the 2 matches against Greece on November 14 and Ireland on November 17 in the Nations League, before handing over the hot seat to the German coach. Thomas Tuchel will become the 3rd foreign coach to lead the England team, after Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006) and Fabio Capello (2007-2012).

Thomas Tuchel officially leads the England team from January 2025.

The FA is actually considering three options: Thomas Tuchel, Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe. However, the Spaniard is under contract with Man City until the summer of 2025 and is not keen on a new job.

Coach Eddie Howe has made a big impression with Newcastle Utd, but he is not the right person to meet the FA's selection criteria. In the document announcing the search for a coach, the FA requires that the coach applying must have "significant experience in English football, achieving good results in the Premier League and/or top international tournaments". Coach Eddie Howe's best achievement with Newcastle was helping the team qualify for the Champions League, but he has never won a major title.

Thomas Tuchel is the person who meets the FA's criteria. He has won 11 titles, including the Champions League, European Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup (Chelsea), 2 Ligue 1, 2 French Super Cups, 1 French Cup, 1 French League Cup (PSG), won the German Super Cup (Dortmund) and Bundesliga (Bayern Munich). Most importantly, Coach Tuchel is free and has not had a new destination after leaving Bayern.

Under Southgate, England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and the finals of EURO 2020 and 2024 but failed to win the title. The FA hopes Tuchel will help England end their 56-year title drought.

This is not a simple task, because in the World Cup and EURO arena, the only foreign coach who has ever won is Otto Rehhagel. The German coach helped Greece win EURO 2004. The remaining 38 championships were won by teams with native coaches.
