Japanese Prime Minister expects new breakthrough in cooperation with China

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru is arranging to hold his first summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, on the sidelines of an international conference scheduled for mid-November.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru will call for the restoration of seafood exports to China, after Beijing agreed to gradually lift a ban on seafood imports from Japan.

Beijing imposed the ban after contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant was released into the sea last August. Mr. Ishiba Shigeru also plans to discuss measures to promote ministerial-level economic dialogue between the two countries.

According to plan, the Japanese Prime Minister will attend the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit from November 15-16 in Peru and the G20 Leaders' Meeting from November 18-19 in Brazil.

Earlier, President Xi Jinping sent congratulations to Mr. Ishiba Shigeru on being elected as Prime Minister of Japan, expressing hope for the prospect of promoting a relationship that is "strategically mutually beneficial."

Mr. Ishiba Shigeru had his first meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on October 10 in Laos during his first diplomatic trip as Japanese leader.
