Miss Grand Vietnam contestant mistook Ba Trung for Ba Trieu

The Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 organizing committee apologized to the audience for confusing the historical figures Ba Trung and Ba Trieu in the national costume round.

On the evening of July 30, the National Cultural Costume sub-competition of the contest took place in Binh Thuan , with 36 contestants performing designs made by many young authors.

Contestant Bui Ly Thien Huong's performance with an outfit named Trung Vuong (author Nguyen Huy Hoang), MC explains the costume inspired by the image of Trung sisters riding an elephant into battle. The author created a model of the elephant using handmade materials, and attached wheels so it could move on stage.

While Bui Ly Thien Huong was performing, the organizers played an audio clip of another historical figure's famous quote - Lady Trieu: "I want to ride the strong wind, step on the fierce waves, kill the whale in the East Sea, drive out the Wu army, reclaim the country, throw off the yoke of slavery and not bow down to be someone else's concubine."

Many viewers watching the livestream discovered the mistake, commenting that this was a major error related to a historical figure.

The same evening, the organizers said: "We apologize and consider this a lesson. When the contestants performed, we discovered an error in this historical detail. However, because the program was broadcast live, we could not handle it immediately." After the competition night ended, the organizers said they would cut out the error on online platforms.

The contest representative explained that the organizers had previously not approved the file containing Ba Trieu's quote in Bui Ly Thien Huong's entry. However, on the main competition night, the technical staff still played the wrong audio file.

At the beginning of the third century, during the second period of Chinese domination (43-544), facing the oppressive regime of the Ngo dynasty on the South, Trieu Thi Trinh and her brother were determined to save the country. When relatives advised her to get married, she boldly responded with a famous saying in history.

Hai Ba Trung is the name used to refer to the Trung sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi - female heroes of the Vietnamese people. According to history, they rose up in revolt and overthrew the Eastern Han government. The era of the two ladies was between the first and second periods of Chinese domination in Vietnamese history.

The National Costume competition has been a favorite of audiences throughout Miss Grand Vietnam seasons. This year's winning costume will be chosen for the Vietnamese beauty to perform at Miss Grand International 2024, held in November in Thailand and Cambodia.

Miss Grand Vietnam 2024 kicked off two months ago. The reigning beauty queen, Le Hoang Phuong, will crown her successor at the final, which will take place on August 3 in Binh Thuan.
