According to The Moscow Times , leader Ramzan Kadyrov of Russia's Chechen Republic said on Telegram on May 15 that Ukrainian intelligence and Czech police helped him stage the theft of his beloved horse.
Zazu, Mr Kadyrov's 16-year-old British thoroughbred horse, was stolen from a stable in the Czech village of Krabčice in March.
In a Telegram post on May 15, Mr. Kadyrov said that Ukrainian intelligence agencies had approached him “through a third party” after the horse was stolen, offering to return Zazu to Mr. Kadyrov in exchange for $18,000.
"They knew about my ties to Zazu and they were not wrong. Of course, I agreed to pay," Mr. Kadyrov wrote on Telegram, saying $18,000 was a small sum.
What did the Kremlin say about the information that Wagner leaders were "colluding" with Ukrainian military intelligence?
The horse Zazu, bought by Mr Kadyrov in 2012, was confiscated along with the Chechen leader's other assets in 2014 under EU sanctions.
The sanctions have prevented Zazu, a former racehorse, from competing. Zazu has been locked up in the Czech Republic along with several other racehorses owned by Mr Kadyrov.
"To be honest, I hoped that Zazu would be returned through official channels, like lifting sanctions or something like that. However, Ukrainian intelligence simply staged Zazu's theft together with the Czech police," Kadyrov said.
The Chechen leader also said the horse was on its way back to him.
"My friends, if you need to transfer anything from Europe, you just need to ask Ukrainian intelligence for help," Mr. Kadyrov joked.
Ukrainian intelligence and Czech authorities have not commented on this information.
