The iPhone's popular search feature was an intern's idea

This feature was first introduced at the 2009 WDC developer conference. To date, Find My includes the Find My Friends function and is compatible with AirTags on all devices in the Apple ecosystem.

In a recent interview with YouTuber SuperSaf, Apple's Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, shared that the idea for this feature came from a surprisingly simple source.

The tech giant’s Find My ecosystem actually started with an intern, Cue says, and the now-ubiquitous tool for forgetful users came from “the idea of someone losing their phone on the sofa.”

“I remember one of the first things we discussed was that the solution had to bypass silent mode if the user had it on, otherwise you wouldn't be able to identify the device,” said the Apple executive.

Find My iPhone was first released in 2010, alongside iPhone OS 3, and was initially only available to paying members of the now-defunct MobileMe service.

With the introduction of iCloud in 2011, the feature became available for free to all users. Later that year, Find My expanded to Macs with “Find My Mac,” and has since come pre-installed on all iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

And now this feature is not only for electronic devices but also for people and lost luggage.

Find My Friends, an app that lets users share their locations with each other, was announced in 2011 the day before Steve Jobs died.

Ten years later, AirTag debuted, allowing people to track personal items using the now-common physical tracking device for luggage, keys, and other accessories.

Other companies have introduced similar technology, with Google announcing in early April that its Find My Device feature would be available for Android phones and tablets.
