The US Supreme Court handed Mr. Trump a big victory.

The US Supreme Court justices unanimously overturned the Colorado Supreme Court's December 19, 2023 ruling that disqualified Mr. Trump from the state's Republican primary ballot on March 5, after finding that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution disqualified him from holding public office again, according to Reuters.

Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits holding office any "officer of the United States" who has sworn an oath "to support the Constitution of the United States" and then "engaged in insurrection or rebellion contrary to the Constitution."

"We conclude that states may remove persons from office who hold or attempt to hold state office. But under the Constitution, states have no power to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, particularly the presidency," a document for the US Supreme Court said.

The justices found that only the US Congress can enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment against federal officials and candidates.

"Big win for America!!!", Mr. Trump wrote on social media right after the US Supreme Court's ruling.

Trump’s eligibility was challenged in court by a group of six Colorado voters who described Trump as a threat to American democracy and sought to hold him accountable for the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by his supporters, according to Reuters. The lawsuits argued that Trump was ineligible to run for office under the 14th Amendment.

Mr. Trump is also barred from voting in the states of Maine and Illinois based on the 14th Amendment, but those decisions have been put on hold pending the Supreme Court's decision in the Colorado case.

Mr. Trump is currently the leading candidate for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the US presidential election on November 5. Mr. Trump's only remaining rival for the Republican nomination is former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
