The Quang Trach - Quynh Luu section is about 225.5km long, passing through the three provinces of Quang Binh , Ha Tinh and Nghe An. With rugged terrain, the main locations are on the Hoanh Son range through Quang Binh and Ha Tinh provinces, so since its implementation, this section has been a big challenge for electricity workers.

According to the representative of the Central Power Project Management Board, the 500kV Quang Trach - Quynh Luu transmission line project, the section passing through Ha Tinh province, has the largest project scale among the provinces with a length of more than 141km, including 285 column foundation locations, 284 column intervals/113 anchor intervals in 9 localities. Up to now, the section has 3 locations that are urgently completing the erection of columns 08, 20, 22 through Ky Anh town. In the picture is the position of column 08 located on the top of Deo Ngang, in Quang Trach district (Quang Binh) being erected.

“The position of column number 8 is designed as a 2-body anchor column, the legs are 4m apart, each column is 83 meters high, weighs 315 tons. While the terrain on the top of the pass is steep, the area is limited, the column position is located between 2 mountain ranges, in front is the vast sea, so this place becomes a “wind pocket” with strong intensity, causing many difficulties in installation”, said Mr. Nguyen Sy Thang - Director of Ha Tinh Power Transmission (the column installation unit).

The wind was strong and continuous, so the construction workers were divided into many groups, taking turns working at all hours. They took advantage of the calm times to install the steel frames so that the columns could be completed soon.

The construction unit used a 220-ton crane to lift the materials up high, but encountered difficulties due to the continuous strong winds. Next to that, the installation of column number 9 in Ky Nam commune (Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh) has been completed, and the unit is pulling the wire through this column.

"The wind is sometimes so strong that it hurts the faces and rips the clothes of the workers on the poles, so when working, safety is something that must be absolutely paid attention to," said Mr. Dau Dinh Duc - a technical officer of Ha Tinh Power Transmission.

Mr. Nguyen Sy Thang - Director of Ha Tinh Power Transmission (pole installation unit) regularly reminds workers to wear seat belts to ensure safety when working at height.

Not only the wind, the positions of the poles perched on the mountain range hundreds of meters high are also a challenge for construction workers.

The intense heat combined with strong winds and flying dust quickly exhausted the electricity workers, forcing them to drink water continuously.

“Most of the locations on the Hoanh Son range are very difficult. Installing poles and pulling wires at these locations also takes more time,” said Mr. Hoang.

Difficult locations located on the hundreds of meters high Hoanh Son range such as columns 20 and 22... cause difficulties for the construction unit.

Workers are completing and pulling the wires at a high pole position in Ky Tan commune (Ky Anh district). “This section has completed 60% of the line, and are pulling the remaining positions and completing the final work. The unfinished pole positions are all located in difficult areas. The unit has requested contractors to complete the construction as soon as possible to reach the finish line on time,” said Mr. Bui Xuan Thai - Deputy Head of Technical Department of the Central Power Project Management Board.

At the location of 2 support columns 135, 136 over Thuong Tuy lake (Cam Thinh commune, Cam Xuyen district). These are 2 of the typical columns of the 500kV line 3 with a height of 145m (normal column 50-80m), weighing 426 tons, equal to a 30-35 storey building, groups of workers are installing phase positioning frames and checking the line.

“This wire span across the lake is more than 1km long, so the sag is very large. We work at a height of more than 100m, in hot sun and strong wind, so we need good physical strength and a strong spirit. Although it is hard, with the grid handover schedule approaching, we have to wake up early and work through lunch to finish on time,” said Le Van Hai, a worker at PC1 Hanoi Joint Stock Company.

To be able to perform technical operations on such a special line requires the worker to be brave, skillful, and especially have skills and experience in handling situations.

The inauguration ceremony of the 500kV line project, circuit 3, is expected to be held before September 2 to celebrate National Day, September 2, in all 9 provinces.
