President-elect Prabowo Subianto was sworn in before the National Assembly on the morning of October 20, officially taking over the leadership of the world's fourth most populous country. He succeeded former President Joko Widodo, who had been in power for a decade.

Mr Prabowo, 73, took office after winning elections in February with nearly 60% of the vote and has spent the past months building a coalition.

President Prabowo, who has run unsuccessfully for president twice before, addressed lawmakers at the Senate of the National Assembly and then went to the presidential palace.

Also attending Mr. Prabowo's inauguration ceremony was his companion for the position of Vice President, Mr. Gibran Rakabuming Raka, 37 years old, the eldest son of the recently retired President Joko Widodo.

Thousands of supporters waved flags on the streets of Jakarta, according to Reuters . Nusron Wahid, an aide to new President Prabowo, said Prabowo and Gibran stopped at seven points on their way from parliament to the presidential palace.

Indonesian police and military have imposed strict security measures, deploying at least 100,000 troops across the city, including snipers and anti-riot units.

New President Prabowo is expected to meet foreign officials, including about 20 heads of state, on the evening of October 20 (local time) at the Presidential Palace.

China said it would send Vice President Han Zheng to the inauguration while the US delegation would be led by US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Mr Prabowo aims to accelerate economic growth to 8% from the current 5%, pledges to make Indonesia self-reliant in producing staples and play a more active role on the international stage.
