Reuters today, September 30, quoted a White House announcement saying that President Biden has authorized the US Secretary of State to direct a cut of $567 million in funding for US Department of Defense defense items and services as well as military education and training to support Taiwan. The announcement did not provide further details.

There is currently no information on the reaction of Taiwan or China to Mr. Biden's above move.

The United States is Taiwan's most important international backer and arms supplier, although the two sides have no formal diplomatic relations. China has repeatedly asked the United States to stop selling weapons to Taiwan.

In June, the US approved two arms sales packages to Taiwan worth a total of about $300 million, mainly spare parts and repair parts for F-16 fighter jets, according to AFP.

In July, China announced its decision to suspend talks with the United States on a new round of consultations on nuclear non-proliferation and arms control, citing continued US arms sales to Taiwan.

In response, the US criticized China for suspending such talks. "It's a regrettable step," US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
