skillful movement

In July, at the intersection of Phan Thi Rang and 3 Thang 2 streets, a resident unfortunately dropped his wallet. Thanks to the security camera system installed throughout the streets of Ward 8, the veteran coordinated with the self-governing residents' group to extract the security camera footage, and just 8 hours later, found it and returned it to the person who dropped it. Not only that, these "magic eyes" have also helped many times detect and promptly handle cases of lost property or disperse groups of young people gathering to race and cause trouble. From a place that once had many potential risks of insecurity and disorder, Ward 8 is now more peaceful and safe.

Previously, Ward 8 was sparsely populated, many households worked all day, often away from home, and bad guys took advantage of this situation to steal or gather to cause trouble. Based on that reality, Ward 8 Veterans Association persistently encouraged people to install security cameras.

Head of the Veterans Association of Ward 8, Vo Van Khoi, said: “The ward has 20 members. At first, it was difficult to mobilize because many families were away from home, and the benefits were not yet clear, and it was also costly. We integrated propaganda into the activities of the self-governing residential groups and persistently mobilized. Exemplary members installed first and then mobilized neighboring households, thanks to which the movement spread.”

From 2021 to present, the Veterans Association of Ward 8 has mobilized people and businesses to install 540 security cameras (420 household cameras and 120 cameras at intersections, key areas such as Ton Duc Thang, Phan Thi Rang, Tran Bach Dang streets...).

When an incident occurs, households proactively coordinate to extract camera footage to provide to the neighborhood and authorities. This method is both quick and promotes the sense of responsibility of each family, creating a widespread security monitoring network.

Trust from the People

The effectiveness of the model has been approved and supported by the people themselves. Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang (58 years old), living on Bui Thi Ba Street, said: “Previously, this area often lost potted plants, foam boxes in front of the door or had groups racing at night, but now it is no longer the case. The situation of lack of security and order has decreased by more than 80% compared to before, we are more excited and secure.”

Veteran Nguyen Van Hieu, a grocery and rice trader on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, is the first to install cameras. Mr. Hieu said: “I installed 3 cameras in front of my store, so that I can manage the store safely from anywhere, contributing to ensuring the neighborhood, and making shoppers and travelers feel more secure.”

Mr. Mai Van Chi - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Ward 8 said: "The ward has 851 households and 15 self-managed residential groups. Veterans coordinate with the ward to set up a Zalo group to report on security and order situations. If there is an unusual incident, just send a message and you will receive an immediate response and timely coordination. Since the cameras were installed, ward management and incident response have been quicker and more effective."

Mr. Huynh Van Duc - Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the ward, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Rach Gia ward said: "The whole ward currently has more than 1,700 members, operating in 61 neighborhood branches. The security camera model in neighborhood 8 is proof of the exemplary role and prestige of veterans in mobilizing people. Members are not only good at mobilizing and responsible but also closely attached to the people, this is a good model that is being replicated."

From initial difficulties to today's consensus, the security camera model not only contributes to maintaining security and order but also demonstrates the "soldier's responsibility" in everyday life, always being exemplary, accompanying the government and people for the peace of the neighborhood.
