Experiencing the flood season in Dong Thap: Tourists go to the fields to make fern, pick sesbania flowers, and admire lotus fields

Taking advantage of the flood season, not only exploiting aquatic resources to increase income, people in the upstream of Dong Thap province also develop tourism with tours to experience the flood season in the border area.

This is the second year that the Farmers' Association, the Women's Union of Thuong Phuoc Commune and Giong Bang Hamlet have coordinated to organize a tour to experience the flood season.

Tourists will visit Thuong Phuoc international border gate, experience flood season activities such as checking nets, setting traps for linh fish, and rowing boats to pick sesbania flowers.

Visit the fish farming model of people in Giong Bang hamlet, this is the livelihood of people in the flood season of the border to increase income while conserving natural aquatic resources.

Mr. Tran Van Binh, resident of Thuong Phuoc commune, Dong Thap province, said this is the second year Giong Bang hamlet has organized a tour to experience the flood season and about 10 households have participated.

Each household will be in charge of a part of the tour such as rowing a boat to take tourists sightseeing, preparing typical dishes, and guiding experiential activities.

"The activity aims to introduce to tourists from near and far the activities of local people during the flood season, directly joining the people in the fields. We have welcomed over 3 groups of tourists from Ho Chi Minh City to visit," said Mr. Binh.

Also taking advantage of the flood season, Ms. Le Thi Trinh's family in Thuong Phuoc commune grows white lotus flowers for good income.

Currently, Ms. Trinh's 5-hectare white lotus field is in peak harvest season, selling an average of about 500 flowers/day for pre-ordered customers, and at peak demand, selling 2,000 flowers/day.

"Lotus flowers can be harvested about 2 months after planting, and the harvest period lasts up to 6 months. Compared to rice cultivation, lotus cultivation is easier, just need to be diligent in monitoring the water level in the field for the lotus to grow.

Each lotus flower delivered to the wholesale market costs about 3,000 VND/flower, the retail price is about 5,000 VND/flower. I plan to hire more workers and expand the lotus growing area in the coming time after the flood season," said Ms. Trinh.
