(Dan Sinh) - Implementing the agreement signed between Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company and the Corn Research Institute at the end of 2022, on "Building and perfecting the process of cultivating biomass corn according to the circular economic model", recently, the two units have implemented a pilot model in Dak Lak and Son La provinces.

Corn is a crop that plays an important role in the strategy of food security, hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and global economic development with an output of more than 1 million tons/year, of which 70% is used as raw material for animal feed; it is superior because of its nutritional value, productivity, green matter, and ease of digestion.

According to data from the Department of Animal Husbandry - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (2020), the total demand for biomass corn for large livestock farming in our country is 27.6 million tons/year, of which livestock enterprises can supply about 70% themselves, the remaining 30% is purchased from outside (about 8 million tons). Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: "Vietnam will continue to grow biomass corn, focusing on processing 1.5 million tons of agricultural by-products to convert into animal feed, thereby saving foreign currency imported for animal feed, estimated at billions of USD per year".

This shows that to ensure the growth of the livestock industry, it is necessary to continue to develop and expand raw material areas for green feed, in which biomass corn is identified as an important crop. And the construction of a biomass corn cultivation process applying advanced cultivation techniques, with the goal of reducing fertilizer use, increasing fertilizer efficiency, increasing corn productivity, contributing to reducing product costs, increasing value per unit area and especially increasing profits for corn farmers today is very necessary.

Implementing the signed agreement on "Building and perfecting the process of cultivating biomass corn according to the circular economic model"; Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company and the Corn Research Institute have joined hands to implement a pilot model from the Summer-Autumn crop and the Autumn-Winter crop in 2023. Two biomass corn production models for two consecutive crops were selected, totaling 8 hectares in two ecological regions: Son La (Northwest) and Dak Lak (Central Highlands). The corn variety used is the most popular and superior corn variety of the Corn Research Institute, which is LVN66 hybrid corn. 100% of the fertilizer used is from Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company.

In Dak Lak, the Summer-Autumn corn crop model was implemented in Cu M'gar commune, Cu M'gar district, with a planting area of 2 hectares, undertaken by farmer Chau Van Khoi. Mr. Khoi implemented the model with 3 fertilizer formulas: 1 is fertilizing according to traditional practices of farmers to compare with 2 Dau Trau fertilizer formulas of Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company. Each fertilized plot according to 1 formula has an area of 700m2, arranged sequentially.

Mr. Chau Van Khoi was very excited to be chosen as a model. According to him, after 2 months of planting, the corn plants in the model grew much better than the control. The plants were big, strong, and especially very green, and would be harvested after 80 days, with a yield that was certainly much higher than the control.

In Son La, the program is being implemented in Moc Chau district, with harvest expected in early August. According to the assessment of farmers and district agricultural extension officers, the biomass corn plants of the program are growing one and a half times better than the control. Local farmers are very excited to participate in the program in the coming crops.

Mr. Ngo Van Dong, General Director of Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, said: “The Corn Institute is an in-depth research institute on corn, and also has an animal feed department. While pursuing the direction of specialized fertilizer production, Binh Dien wishes to take advantage of the strengths of the specialized institute to develop and perfect a set of fertilizer products for corn in general, and biomass corn in particular; contributing to increasing the volume and quality of domestic animal feed, reducing the import burden for the country.”
