Nghia Trai village (Tan Quang commune, Van Lam district, Hung Yen province), also known as Nghia Trai "medicinal village", is a medical village with hundreds of years of history.

Through many ups and downs, the profession of growing and processing medicinal herbs in Nghia Trai village is still being continued through many generations, creating jobs for dozens and hundreds of households.

Like the farmers born and raised in Nghia Trai village, Ms. Do Thi Hoa, Director of Hoa Thien Phu Production - General Service Cooperative, has been exposed to medicinal plants since childhood.

At first, she was just familiar with the smell of the medicine and remembered the name of the plant. Gradually, Ms. Hoa developed a love and passion for it, and was determined to develop the Nghia Trai medicinal herb brand to friends everywhere.

From a small business, in 2017, Ms. Hoa and some households in Nghia Trai village established Hoa Thien Phu Production - General Service Cooperative. Up to now, the Cooperative has nearly 20 members with a production land area of more than 40 hectares.

Looking back on her journey, Ms. Hoa confided: "After 20 years in the medicinal herbs industry, the more I work, the more I love and appreciate this profession. Our experience in growing and processing medicinal herbs today is knowledge that has been accumulated through many generations. My family was poor in the past, and I did not have the opportunity to study further. I have the foundation I have today thanks to learning from those experiences."

The model of growing, purchasing and processing medicinal herbs (mainly chrysanthemums) is bringing in billions of dong in income for Hoa Thien Phu Production and General Service Cooperative. Ms. Hoa's family's model alone earns 2 billion dong/year, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 200-300 million dong.

Chrysanthemum (also known as chrysanthemum) is a medicinal plant that brings a large source of income to cooperative members. This medicinal plant prefers cool climates, is a herbaceous plant, and one plant produces many flowers.

Chrysanthemum flowers are bright yellow and as small as coins. When blooming, the pistils are full and fragrant, with a bitter taste, and are a valuable medicine.

"Chrysanthemum flowers are suitable for Van Lam land, so they have a unique fragrance that cannot be found anywhere else. In the past, our ancestors used chrysanthemum flowers to make medicine to help improve eyesight, regulate blood pressure, fight inflammation, reduce coughs, and clear phlegm... Chrysanthemum flowers are used to make tea that is very good for beauty and spirit," Ms. Hoa added.

Chrysanthemums are harvested from November to January of the following year. Every year, Thien Phu Flower Production and General Service Cooperative harvests about 150 tons of chrysanthemums.

After harvesting, chrysanthemum flowers will be processed and preserved by freeze-drying. The finished product is being sold for 450,000 - 500,000 VND/kg, depending on wholesale or retail.

Chrysanthemum products of the Cooperative have been recognized as 3-star OCOP products. Having built up a reputation in the market, the Cooperative's chrysanthemum products have been contacted to purchase by many tea companies and tea factories.

Preserving the profession of growing and processing medicinal herbs, getting rich with farmers

In recent years, the area of land for growing medicinal plants of the people of Nghia Trai village has gradually narrowed due to the urbanization process. The output of medicinal plants has gradually decreased, not enough to meet market demand.

Concerned about preserving traditional crafts and maintaining cooperatives, in 2021, Ms. Hoa cooperated with farmers in Viet Hung and Luong Tai communes (Van Lam district, Hung Yen province) to expand the area of medicinal plant cultivation.

These are two communes with similar soil conditions to Tan Quang commune, with a lot of agricultural land. Supporting local people, the cooperative provides medicinal plant seedlings, fertilizers, and guides on medicinal plant growing techniques for people to grow medicinal plants, especially chrysanthemums.

After 3 years of bringing chrysanthemums to Viet Hung and Luong Tai communes, chrysanthemums grown in these localities have high yield and good quality.

Currently, the chrysanthemum growing area has expanded to over 40 hectares, creating jobs for hundreds of workers. Households are guaranteed to purchase products by the cooperative at a price of 35,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of 13 to 18 million VND/sao/crop for people, much higher than rice cultivation.

By mastering flower growing techniques, households in the two communes of Viet Hung and Luong Tai can proactively plant seeds and prevent pests and diseases for plants.

In 2024, Typhoon Yagi suddenly swept through, causing dozens of hectares of chrysanthemums that were about to be harvested to fall, threatening to lose everything. However, with many years of experience growing chrysanthemums, the Cooperative and its members quickly propagated from the remaining stumps.

Accordingly, the cooperative ensures sufficient supply of chrysanthemums according to market demand. The flower farm has reinforced its cover system to minimize damage in the following stormy seasons.

To increase the value of the product, Hoa Thien Phu Production - General Service Cooperative has invested in modern freeze-drying technology, helping to preserve chrysanthemum flowers for a long time while still retaining their medicinal properties.

Currently, the Cooperative has 3 high-capacity freeze dryers. The finished products after drying will be stored in plastic bags in a specialized warehouse, equipped with air conditioning to avoid damage and loss of quality. Dried chrysanthemums can be stored for 1-2 years.

From growing and processing chrysanthemums and medicinal herbs, members of Thien Phu Flower Production - General Service Cooperative have a stable source of income.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bang, a cooperative member, excitedly said: "Since joining the cooperative, I have not had to worry about the source of goods and where to sell them. Nghia Trai medicinal herbs have a reputation in the market, and my business is reputable, so customers still come back regularly. Every year, I purchase and process medicinal herbs and earn 300-500 million/year. Not only me, but many other members are earning good income from this profession."

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thuy, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Quang Commune (Van Lam District, Hung Yen Province) said: Ms. Do Thi Hoa, Director of Hoa Thien Phu Production and Service Cooperative, is an excellent farmer member of Tan Quang Commune, Van Lam District, Hung Yen Province. The model of growing chrysanthemums - medicinal plants of Hoa Thien Phu Production and Service Cooperative not only contributes to preserving the local traditional craft but also creates jobs for many workers in Tan Quang Commune and neighboring communes...
