Drug lord gets more than 800 years in prison for massacre

Guatemala A court in Guatemala City sentenced a drug lord to 808 years in prison for his role in the massacre of 15 Nicaraguans and a Dutch citizen in 2008.

Morales was arrested in 2022 after 13 years on the run and his trial is set to begin in September 2023.

In the 2008 massacre, the bus carrying the victims from Nicaragua and Guatemala was stopped by drug traffickers, according to prosecutors.

Eight other suspects, including Montiel Marin's wife, Sara Cruz, were also sentenced to prison, with varying terms.

Although the court sentenced him to more than 800 years in prison, Guatemalan law actually stipulates that a prisoner cannot serve more than 50 years in prison.
