China: Patient loses all savings after being misdiagnosed by doctor

A Shanghai man spent his entire life savings on HPV treatment but was later found not to have the disease, sparking public outrage over medical errors.

According to local media, two months ago, Mr. Zhang in Shanghai, China felt itchy and uncomfortable so he went to the private hospital Quang Trach in Shanghai for a medical examination. After performing a series of tests as requested by the doctor, Mr. Zhang received a diagnosis of "positive for 4 HPV indexes, of which 2 were high-risk indexes and 2 were low-risk indexes". Worried about his health, Mr. Zhang immediately agreed to treatment with an initial cost of 855 yuan (about more than 3 million VND).

Over the next 10 days, Mr. Zhang returned to the hospital for treatment and spent a total of 27,000 yuan (about 94.7 million VND). However, when he went for a check-up at Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital, the HPV test results showed that "all the indicators were negative", meaning that Mr. Zhang did not have the disease.

Extremely angry when he learned that he was misdiagnosed, Mr. Truong said that Quang Trach Hospital needs to take full responsibility for making him waste all his savings unreasonably.

A representative of Quang Trach Hospital admitted the mistake and said that they had received Mr. Truong's complaint. The hospital proposed to refund all treatment costs and compensate 2 months of labor wages. However, after many mediations with the participation of the Minhang District Medical Coordination Committee, the two sides have not yet reached a final agreement. Mr. Truong has made the incident public through the media, hoping that the hospital will have to compensate him more appropriately under public pressure.

This incident raises concerns about the quality of service at private hospitals, and emphasizes the importance of cross-checking diagnostic results to avoid financial and psychological losses for patients.
