Tuchel as England coach: A bargain for the Three Lions

According to many reputable sources from Europe, Coach Thomas Tuchel will follow Gareth Southgate to become the head coach of the England team. Tuchel's presence has made English fans skeptical, because the two foreign coaches who have worked for the Three Lions have not achieved outstanding results, far behind Southgate.

However, if we consider the selection criteria of the English Football Association (FA) when publicly looking for a coach in the summer of 2024, there are not many people in the world more suitable than Tuchel. According to Sky Sports, the FA immediately worked in less than 48 hours to bring Tuchel - a German coach to Wembley. So why is the FA so crazy about Tuchel?

Understand English football

Unlike Sven Goran-Eriksson and Fabio Capello, coach Thomas Tuchel actually experienced the football environment in this country before taking charge of the England team. He led Chelsea for 20 months, before moving to Bayern Munich.

In that year and a half, Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and the European Super Cup. The last time Chelsea finished in the top four of the Premier League was also under Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel has a special affection for Mason Mount.

During his time at Chelsea, he was particularly fond of English players. Ben Chilwell, Mason Mount and Reece James all grew up remarkably under Tuchel's guidance.

In the Champions League final against Man City, the German coach registered 6 domestic players. Among them, Mason Mount was the one who assisted Kai Havertz to score, bringing the "Elephant Ear" trophy to Stamford Bridge.

Sacked by Chelsea for some poor results at the beginning of the 2022-23 season, Tuchel still admitted his feelings for English football: "I'm sad. I'm sad because I think my work at Chelsea is not done yet. I have a great relationship with the players. I have a great relationship with all the staff."

As soon as he joined Bayern Munich, the first contract he wanted to bring in was his old player Mason Mount. The deal was unsuccessful, Tuchel immediately came up with a plan to recruit Harry Kane and was approved by the board of directors. In his first season playing in the Bundesliga, Kane scored 36 goals, winning the title of top scorer.

In the middle of the 2023/24 season, Tuchel recruited Eric Dier - a defender who was no longer used at Tottenham. Under Tuchel's direction, Dier played extremely well and won 1 of 2 starting positions in the center of defense.

Kane and Dier are the pillars of Bayern Munich in the 2023-24 season.

Southgate's clear upgrade

Coach Thomas Tuchel has won 11 major titles with 4 different clubs: Bayern Munich, Chelsea, PSG and Dortmund. At each team, he built the squad with available players.

At Bayern Munich, he used a 4-2-3-1 formation that specialized in control. In England, he took advantage of the wing-climbing ability of Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and the creativity of Mason Mount to build a 3-4-1-2 framework, helping Chelsea win the Champions League.

At Dortmund, Tuchel used a 4-1-4-1 formation to overwhelm the midfield. Shinji Kagawa and Ikay Gundogan played brilliantly in this formation, later earning moves to Man Utd and Man City.

Tuchel led a modest squad to beat Bayern and Frankfurt to win the German Super Cup.

In terms of flexibility, Tuchel is much better than Gareth Southgate. The English coach has managed the best generation of players in the past decade, but has not won any titles. Southgate's initiatives have also not shown effectiveness at EURO 2024.

Phil Foden was lackluster when placed on the left wing. Trent Alexander - Arnold lost ground when promoted to the midfield. Kieran Trippier was forced to play on the left wing throughout the EURO, even though Southgate still had Marc Guehi to play in that position.

England’s problem is not the players. They have more than enough talent to win the title. With Tuchel, who has a natural affinity for the podium, England can dream of winning their first tournament since 1966.

The problem now lies only with the FA. They seem to be not satisfied with Tuchel, when only activating the 18-month contract. The German coach only has one big opportunity to show himself, that is the 2026 World Cup.
