Natural beauty
Every year, floodwaters from the upper Mekong River flow into the Cuu Long Delta, bringing with them a rich amount of alluvium and products. In the West, people call it the flood season. Luckily, I was born in An Giang , so I have had the opportunity to live with the flood season from my childhood until now.
When the flood season comes, I wander around the flood-discharged fields. From the An Phu source to the Tinh Bien border area, from the majestic Tri Ton land to the Lang Linh area (Thanh My Tay) where the ancestors left their mark. Everywhere brings special feelings about the flood season. The feeling of watching the immense sea of water running as far as the eye can see evokes special emotions.
What impressed me the most was the image of the fields in the border localities such as Vinh Te ward, Tinh Bien ward in the flood season. Due to the terrain characteristics, the mountains in this area are not far from the rice fields. When the flood season comes, it creates a picturesque landscape. Those who see it for the first time are amazed by the spectacular natural scenery. Those who deliberately seek out that scene like me still enjoy it every time they see it again.
Many young people from other provinces come to An Giang during the flood season to freely check in and preserve their youth with the An Giang flood season. The view from Provincial Road 955A towards Sam Mountain, where the Buddha Shakyamuni statue carved into the cliff is chosen by many tourists and An Giang residents to check in. "During the dry season, the scenery here is very beautiful, but during the flood season, the beauty increases many times over. The field at the foot of Sam Mountain is like a giant mirror, reflecting two parallel worlds ," said Mr. Tran Thanh Luan, a resident of Chau Phu commune. Passionate about photography, Luan travels everywhere to preserve beautiful scenery and the An Giang flood season always attracts him.
Like Mr. Luan, I often take pictures of the flood season in my hometown. Sometimes, it is just the lotus flowers blooming in the early morning or the Melaleuca branches secretly showing off their colors in the flood season. All of them bring special emotions to those who love An Giang land, love the flood season. Perhaps, the feeling of "framing" the flood season scenery helps people find a part of their childhood in it.
Human beauty
Not only the natural scenery but also the people of An Giang contribute to the beauty of the flood season. It is the beauty of hard work, honesty, loyalty and kindness. It is not difficult to see the moment when people follow the profession of fishing for a living in the middle of the flooded fields. With visitors from afar, they do not hesitate to meet and freely tell stories of fishing all night, days of casting nets in the far fields, nights of watching the nets to welcome the flood on the 10th day of the lunar calendar.
Being a traveler, I was fortunate to meet many people who fished for a living. They could be old men in their sixties or tough men with weathered looks on their faces. They did different things to make a living, but in general, they rarely had much left over, only affection was left over. When guests came to visit, they quickly boiled water to make tea. When guests stayed for a long time, they were invited to a flood-season meal and treated them with all their heart. There were no delicacies, just things that appeared once a year with the flood water and were extremely delicious.
What I remember most was his hearty voice, with a distinctly Western accent: “If you’re passing by, stop by. My hometown is poor but very happy.” When we parted, my friend put into my hand a bunch of dried fish of all kinds. It was simple, plain, but full of the love of the homeland that I can never forget.
Then came the days when I joined the crowd of people going to bathe in the fields during the flood season. Bathing in the fields was not strange to me, because I grew up during the flood season, but what impressed me was the way people treated each other. On the road along the Doi Thanh canal, Chau Phong commune, I happily enjoyed the feeling of driving along the flooded fields. These days, the road surface was about 2 inches above the water surface, and there were sections where the water was across the road, becoming a playground for children. Because this field had not been flooded for a long time, both adults and children were excited.
Walking in that crowd, I was swept away by the rustic joy. What I liked most was that people, unfamiliar or strange, just talked to each other as if they had known each other for a long time. I talked to many people and received enthusiastic responses. There were cases where after just a few greetings, they invited each other to “get together for a drink”. The flood season feast was not luxurious, mainly seven dishes of freshwater fish with a bunch of tamarind and guava from a family garden. Sitting with them on a tarp spread close to the water’s edge, I clearly felt the generosity of “all people are brothers” of the Western people.
This year during the flood season, I still wandered around the fields to capture beautiful moments of nature, landscapes and people. In the coming days, I will introduce to everyone the beauty of the flood season in my hometown.
