About the two reduplicative words "lucid" and "profound"

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - In the previous article, we analyzed the independent meanings of the elements in the two words “rạng sáng” and “rục sáng”. In this article, we will analyze the independent meanings of “bright” and “profound”. (The part in quotation marks after the entry number is the original text of the Vietnamese Reduplicated Words Dictionary - Institute of Linguistics - edited by Hoang Van Hanh; the line breaks are our discussion):

About the two reduplicative words

1- “WISDOM tt. has the ability to perceive and solve problems clearly and correctly. Assess the situation very clearly. Wisely choose who to vote for”.

The word "sang suat" is a Sino-Vietnamese compound word [meaning the same time]: the Chinese origin of "sang" is the word "lang" 朗, meaning bright, clear (like Listening to the teacher's lecture, my mind became clear); the Chinese origin of "thot" is the word "triet" 哲, meaning clear, thorough, seeing through from one side to the other (like understanding; seeing through; transparent; seeing through):

- Vietnamese dictionary (Hoang Phe, editor-in-chief of Vietlex) explains "bright" as "having the ability to perceive and perceive quickly and clearly. Listening to explanations, one can see that one is bright ~ intelligent, quick-witted ~ one is bright at other people's work, but blind at one's own work (tng). Tn: dark".

- Vietnamese dictionary (Association for Khai Tri Tien Duc) explains “suot” as “through, penetrating <>Throughly penetrating one side to the other. Understanding thoroughly. Staying awake all day long. Water is clear at the bottom. Literature - material: A month-long drunkenness, a whole night of laughter (K). A clear lamp, a faint yellow curtain (Kieu)”.

Reference: We also see the L↔S relationship [lăng↔sáng] in other fields of the Pig such as: Lãng 浪↔sòng (water waves); lang 狼↔sói (wolf); the TR↔S relationship [triết↔suột] such as Triết 徹↔suột (through); Triết 澈↔suột (transparent).

2- “DEEP tt. 1. Having the nature of going into depth, into the real content, not stopping at the surface, having important and long-term meaning. Profound changes in the economy . Deep contradictions. Deep understandings”.

Profound is a compound word [of the same era]: deep comes from the Chinese word 深 which means depth from the top, or outside, to the inside or down, figuratively meaning the end, the ultimate of things (like profound knowledge; deep learning).

Reference: The relationship TH↔S (deep 深↔deep), appears in many other cases such as: iron 鐵↔sát; bê 採↔sây; tower 榻↔sạp (collapse); tower 塌↔sập/sạp (collapse/collapse); the relationship AM↔AU (deep↔deep), we can also see in other cases, such as tham 深↔lâu (long lasting); dam 膽↔lau (cleaning),...

With the element "sach" (we have not yet found the etymology of this word), it refers to the sharpness of tools such as knives and scissors, and figuratively means skillfulness and agility (like sharp; very sharp pen; sharp learning).

Thus, because the constituent elements of words such as bright, clear, deep, and sharp have the ability to function independently, both the words "bright" and "deep" are independent compound words, not reduplicative words.
