Vietnam speaks out about new moves in the East Sea

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang affirmed that Vietnam is ready to work with all parties to resolve disputes and disagreements by peaceful means in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UNCLOS.

Responding to a reporter's question asking for Vietnam's reaction to the Philippine President's promulgation of the Law on Maritime Zones, the Law on Maritime Streams of the Philippine Archipelagic Waters and China's announcement of the "Notification of Standard Names of Part of China's Islands and Shoals in the South China Sea" including 64 entities in the East Sea, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated:

"As has been repeatedly affirmed, Vietnam has sufficient legal basis and historical evidence to affirm its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in accordance with international law, as well as its sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over maritime zones established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

Vietnam respects the rights of coastal states to enact domestic laws and regulations related to the sea in accordance with UNCLOS 1982. At the same time, Vietnam also requests other countries to fully respect Vietnam's sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, and Vietnam's rights over Vietnam's maritime zones established in accordance with UNCLOS 1982.

Vietnam resolutely and persistently implements measures in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS, to exercise its sovereignty over Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago; its sovereignty, sovereign rights, jurisdiction and legitimate interests in its maritime zones.

Vietnam is ready to work with all parties to resolve disputes and disagreements by peaceful means in accordance with international law, especially UNCLOS 1982."
