Vietnam speaks on behalf of the Core Group on the Resolution on Human Rights and Climate Change at the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council

On March 13, within the framework of the 55th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN) in Geneva, Switzerland, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, spoke on behalf of the Core Group on the Resolution on Human Rights and Climate Change, including Vietnam, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, in a dialogue session on the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the topic of measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the enjoyment of the right to food.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung affirmed that ensuring food security is always a top priority for countries, especially in the context of challenges caused by climate change that exacerbate vulnerability to hunger and malnutrition.

Climate change increasingly complicates food production and access, especially in vulnerable areas, undermining food security, nutrition and the full realization of the right to food.

The Ambassador thanked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for addressing this important issue throughout his report and for making recommendations to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on the full realization of the right to food.

One of the measures proposed in the above report is the development and implementation of policies that ensure a just transition to more sustainable food systems.

The Ambassador asked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to analyze this issue more clearly and propose measures that countries, especially those with a food export orientation, can transform their agricultural activities to ensure food security, increase resilience to climate change, while maintaining stable livelihoods and economic prosperity.
