The play Once Upon a Time was adapted from ancient Vietnamese folk tales and legends (from 300 BC) and directed by French director Quentin Delorme.
The French Institute in Vietnam and the ATH Theatre and Arts Studio will present the play Once Upon a Time performed by French and Vietnamese artists at 8:00 p.m. on September 21 and 5:00 p.m. on September 22 at the Alexandre Yersin International French School (44 Gia Thuong Ward, Ngoc Thuy, Long Bien, Hanoi ).
In the past, the main inspiration was from three folk tales that were adapted into plays: The God of Heaven (a story about the origin of the world), The Dragon and Fairy's Descendants (a story about the birth of Vietnamese society) and The Legend of Betel and Areca (illustrating the fundamental connection between humans and nature).
The three stories combine to create a colorful play, in which each story unfolds in turn and resonates together.
Excerpted from the book Dam Nhat Da and other Vietnamese legends by writer Tran Huy Minh, these three mythological stories are still passed down to this day and have one outstanding common point: the harmonious combination of imagination, the supernatural and realism.
Driven by the idea of a popular theatre that offers cultural and educational opportunities to everyone, French director Quentin Delorme wishes to take the audience on a magical, exciting journey through a theatre work suitable for all ages thanks to its diverse and innovative forms of expression.
The production brings together Vietnamese and French artists to combine their two languages, two cultures, their aesthetic tendencies and their historical and contemporary references. Through this experimental theatrical space, the two cultures are subtly blended.
Director Quentin Delorme said: "Through recreating the legend of Au Co, the formation of West Lake or Thach Mon mountain... I aspire to bring the audience back to the roots of a richer, more communal and humane culture.
By recreating three classic stories that are fundamental to Vietnamese culture, I also want to highlight the extremely clear similarities between Vietnamese culture and other cultures in the world .
Legends are a binding, universal and timeless material. I believe that these are epic, magical and wonderful "weapons" that allow the creation of a more universal culture.
Once Upon a Time is a place where everyone can find themselves, whether the audience is from Vietnam, France or other countries, whether they are children or adults and whatever their social status, because the play uses global cultural norms: music, video projection, comics, puppetry, Greek tragedy…
Therefore, the work will be an interesting and exciting journey, brought about through rich forms of artistic expression.
Director Quentin Delorme graduated from the prestigious French drama school Cours Florent (Paris). From 2003 to 2010, he was the director of a drama troupe and worked in many countries such as France, Vietnam, Morocco, Italy and Belgium. Winner of the 2008 “Young Talents of Paris” award, he also participated in the founding and management of the cultural center "Le Sans Plomb" in Ivry sur Seine (France). In 2010, together with Marianne Seguin, he founded ATH (Art and Theatre Workshop) in Vietnam, emphasizing personal development through performing arts. Driven by the idea of a popular and humane theatre, his creations are a journey in search of new forms of artistic expression while offering a different perspective on human nature and the world around us. |
