People lined up to buy gold in Ho Chi Minh City at noon on August 29.
Domestic gold prices have been hitting all-time highs, not only due to the impact of world prices but also due to the scarcity of domestic supply. Despite the peak gold prices, people still line up to buy. When SJC gold bars are no longer available, many people switch to buying gold rings and also "clean up" this type of gold.
The situation of queuing to buy gold has not only happened at Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) in recent days, but also at some other companies, such as Mi Hong Company.
Some images recorded by reporters of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper at Mi Hong Company's store this afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City:
At Mi Hong gold shop in Ho Chi Minh City, people lined up to buy gold rings, after it was announced that SJC gold bars were no longer available for sale. Each customer was allowed to buy 1 tael of gold ring, with the current price of 123.5 million VND/tael.
Many people said they waited 1-2 hours but when it was their turn, the store staff announced that they were out of gold rings and would sell them again when they had more. Some people said they had to "go back and forth" several times to buy 1 tael of plain gold rings.
Mi Hong gold shop staff said that for many days now, customers have been coming in large numbers to buy SJC gold bars or gold rings. Each person is allowed to buy 1 tael of gold ring per day. If they want to buy more, they will have to come back and queue the next day.
In the midday sun, many people still patiently lined up to wait their turn. Mr. Hoang Minh (living in Gia Dinh ward) said it took him nearly 2 hours to buy 1 tael of gold ring. However, many people waited their turn but were told by the staff that they were out of gold, leaving them empty-handed.
Ms. Thanh Nga (living in Saigon ward) said that about half a month ago, she intended to buy SJC gold bars but hesitated. Now, when she went to the gold shop, she could only buy 1 tael of plain gold ring.
Domestic gold prices have been continuously rising in recent days and many people continue to line up to buy.
At around 2:00 p.m. the same day, the gold store staff announced that they were temporarily out of both SJC gold bars and plain gold rings.
