According to information from the Sin Suoi Ho commune authorities, in recent days, there has been prolonged heavy rain in the area. In Sin Suoi Ho village (Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province), a landslide and a sand pit have appeared. The landslide is a geological crack more than 200m long, on the hillside where the people of Sin Suoi Ho village grow cymbidiums. The widest subsidence is about 1m, the subsidence surface area is about 8,000m2 and a large sand pit has appeared below.

In addition to the long cracks, the subsidence has also caused many small cracks on the surface of the concrete road system within the village. Currently, this landslide is getting longer and wider, threatening the safety of life and property of many households here.

Mr. Vang A Chinh, Head of Sin Suoi Ho village (Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau) said: The area where the landslide appeared has steep terrain, with surface water and underground water. Below the crack is a concrete road and the living area of ​​19 households, with 89 people. The geology here is alluvial soil and rock; above is a high mountain range, so there is a risk of landslides and subsidence when heavy rain lasts for a long time. "While working in the fields, I went to check and saw that the water flowing down the stream was very muddy. I ran up to the top of the village in the bird's nest house area to check and saw many cracks. I immediately told the people in the households living below the landslide to move up and stay temporarily with other unaffected households above."

Immediately after discovering the landslide, Sin Suoi Ho village reported to the commune authorities and the commune authorities reported to higher levels to find a solution.

Ensuring safety for 19 households

Sharing with reporters about the plan to ensure safety for people, Mr. Cheo Quay Hoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Sin Suoi Ho commune, Phong Tho district, said that to ensure safety for households living under the landslide, Sin Suoi Ho commune has assigned staff to be on duty 24/7 in the village; coordinated with people to put up danger warning signs, not allowing people to return home when it rains in the area.

"Since the day we discovered the slide, we have been on high alert and have been spreading the word, warning the residents of the danger. The residents have also actively cooperated with the authorities, not returning to sleep in their own homes but sleeping in other homes in the village. Up to now, we have put up signs and reported to the authorities, the District People's Committee and are currently surveying locations to find a place to move people to a safe place," said Mr. Cheo Quay Hoa.

Because the slide is getting longer and wider, the risk of landslides is very high, so the People's Committee of Lai Chau province is assigning the Phong Tho district government to urgently develop plans to move people to a safe place. The resettlement arrangement is carried out publicly, democratically, based on the opinions and wishes of the people.

Mr. Trinh Van Doan, Vice Chairman of Phong Tho District People's Committee, Lai Chau Province, said: The District People's Committee has planned two options: for households to find resettlement land on the spot, the State will support the relocation costs according to regulations; or move to the nearby Can Cau village, with the State providing the land and auxiliary works.

The authorities want people to move to a safe place and ask them to think about their options early. The authorities will accompany them and support them to the maximum extent possible according to regulations. Once people have decided on their options, the commune authorities will mobilize forces to support them during their move and may help them with manpower when dismantling and rebuilding their houses.
