According to the Global Times , a total of 41 Chinese chess players were punished, including famous players Zhao Xinxin, Wang Yang, and Zheng Weidong. These three players were banned from competing for life and stripped of their professional titles by the China Chinese Chess Association (CXA). According to QQ , all three players participated in the 2022 Asian Games and won gold medals.
The investigation found that Zhao and 40 others were involved in numerous violations such as match-fixing and bribery, which seriously damaged the development of Chinese chess in the country, CXA said. In addition, 34 other players were suspended from competition, depending on the severity of the violations, while four received formal reprimands.
Previously, Wang Tianyi – who held the national number one position for 10 consecutive years – and player Wang Yaofei were also banned from competing for life for illegal activities such as match-fixing and match manipulation.

According to the Economic Observer newspaper, since April 2024, after Wang Tianyi was detained, the police have repeatedly summoned Zheng Weidong for investigation. Initially, Zheng denied participating in match-fixing cases, but as the investigation progressed, he admitted to wrongdoing. Zheng stated that the amount of money received from match-fixing was only around tens of thousands of yuan.
The penalties stem from an investigation into a “recording” scandal in China’s chess world, which involved cheating and manipulation of match results.
Since April 2023, audio recordings and text messages have appeared on online platforms, accusing Wang Yuefei and Hao Jichao of discussing match-fixing agreements, according to Xinhua. In October of the same year, veteran player Dang Phi publicly denounced the matter on social media, demanding a thorough investigation.
In April 2024, the police officially opened an investigation into a number of players suspected of violating the law. The investigation results showed that many players and coaches were involved in match-fixing, bribery and corruption in various forms, lasting for a long time.
CXA asserts that individuals being investigated for law violations will face severe penalties if the allegations are confirmed.
