400 houses at 'World's Best Tourist Village' submerged in water

Speaking to the press on the morning of September 20, Mr. Truong Thanh Duyen - Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district ( Quang Binh ) said that Tan Hoa commune is located in a "basin" terrain, surrounded by rocky mountains.

Over the past two days, heavy rain has caused water from upstream rivers and streams to flow down, inundating hundreds of houses.

According to preliminary statistics, as of 10:00 am today, the flood has caused more than 400 houses in Tan Hoa to be submerged from 0.5 to 2 meters deep. Early this morning, the flood water rose nearly 2 meters high, completely isolating Tan Hoa from the outside. Currently, the flood water continues to rise and the rain shows no signs of stopping.

Unlike previous years, many properties and household items were submerged and swept away by water. But this year, the local authorities warned of serious flooding after storm No. 4 passed.

People had prepared furniture, belongings and properties on the floating house to take shelter so everything went safely.

Floating houses - an initiative that has been implemented many years ago in Tan Hoa, helping people adapt to floods. When the water level rises, the house will automatically float up to the water level, ensuring the safety of people and property inside.

Mr. Truong Thanh Duẩn said that the whole commune has more than 700 households, and the people here are used to "living with floods". Especially thanks to the floating houses, the local people have proactively responded to minimize property damage.

In October 2023, Tan Hoa village, Tan Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh province was honored by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as "The best tourist village in the world".

Tan Hoa is known to many tourists for its natural beauty of mountains and forests and peaceful scenery. However, this village is also located in an area known as a "flood center" or "water bag" because it often faces flooding during the rainy season.
