In May, when the warm spring dispels the ice of the cold winter months, the land of maple leaves is lit up by the beauty of hundreds of blooming flowers.

The special highlight of May every year is the world's largest tulip festival with hundreds of thousands of brilliant flowers from 100 varieties of tulips.

This year, the tulip festival lasts 11 days, from May 10 to 20 at Commissioners Park, along the Rideau Canal, Ottawa.

Held since 1953, the festival commemorates the role of Canadian troops in the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe.

In recognition of the Canadian military's assistance, the Dutch Royal Family sent 10,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa each year. The tradition continues to this day.

Therefore, tulips have become a symbol of friendship between the Netherlands and Canada.

Last year, the festival attracted more than 416,000 people over 11 days, with about half of them tourists and the other half locals who came on weekdays, festival organizers said.

On the first day of the festival, thousands of people in the capital and tourists came here to admire and take pictures with the flower that signals the warm spring that has flooded the capital Ottawa.
