On June 30, a federal judge in the US rejected Apple's request to dismiss the antitrust lawsuit initiated by the US government , allowing the lawsuit related to the accusation that Apple monopolizes the smartphone market to continue to be tried.

The ruling, issued by Judge Julien Neals of the District of New Jersey, clearly explained that the Government had made reasonable arguments showing that "Apple" had a monopoly in the smartphone market and had engaged in anti-competitive behavior to maintain that position.

Previously, in March 2024, the US Department of Justice 's Antitrust Division along with 20 states accused Apple of illegally monopolizing the smartphone market through restrictions imposed on app developers and device manufacturers, thereby stifling competition and innovation.

According to the lawsuit, Apple controls 65% of the US smartphone market and 70% of the high-end smartphone market. Judge Neals found that these numbers, combined with significant barriers to entry, were enough to show Apple had a monopoly and warranted trial.

The US government accuses Apple of maintaining its dominance by restricting five key technologies, including: super apps, cloud streaming apps, text messaging, smartwatches and digital wallets.

If the government wins, Apple could face remedies ranging from changing its business practices to the risk of having to sell part of its hardware and software empire.

There is no specific trial date yet, but the case is expected to last for many years./.
