Apple is still developing an in-display fingerprint sensor

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên25/11/2023

According to 4gnews , fingerprint sensors are still a popular authentication technology among fans, but the limitations of the design that takes up screen space have made it less popular with Apple since the company switched to Face ID. There have been rumors that Apple is trying to explore Touch ID technology under the screen to implement in the iPhone 16 series.

iPhone 16 users still have to rely on Face ID for biometric login instead of Touch ID

However, the latest report on Chinese social network Weibo said that bringing Touch ID to iPhone 16 is still not possible. This is disappointing news for fans but also not too surprising when looking at what is happening.

Explaining this reason, sources said that Apple has permanently stopped producing the chips needed to use Touch ID on iPhones. The remaining components in stock will be transferred to the iPhone SE 3. This move even shows that Apple seems to have no plans to restore Touch ID on its smartphones, because ending the production of components needed for Touch ID is not simple.

It's important to note that the only Apple phone that still uses Touch ID is the iPhone SE 3. New reports also suggest that the lineup will soon ditch the fingerprint sensor as well, following the rollout of Face ID to the iPhone SE 4.

The question is, is this the end of the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone? It's still too early to answer this question with certainty, as there are many rumors that Apple is continuing to develop fingerprint sensors integrated into the screen. This new technology could be released in 2026, when Apple could place Face ID sensors under the screen of the iPhone 18. What is almost certain at this point is that the return of Touch ID with the iPhone 16 will not happen.
