Many people think that beauty contests nowadays should be changed to "Beauty" contests, removing the word "Vietnam" from the title. Because "The winner cannot represent Vietnam, because sometimes the winner of a beauty contest is just organized by an entertainment company."
Buy a crown
With the noise surrounding the name Nam Em, netizens believe that "Nam Em's stripping of the crown of Miss Mekong Delta" is entirely possible. Previously, the organizing committee of the Miss Mekong Delta pageant announced that it had stopped cooperating with Nam Em after the noise. "Nam Em's statements have significantly affected the reputation of the pageant, especially when the pageant is about to restart. In the past time, we have received a lot of feedback from the public about reviewing Nam Em's role and responsibility for the pageant" - the pageant's organizing committee informed.
I thought the reaction of netizens and the actions of the Miss Mekong Delta pageant's organizing committee would make Nam Em "scared". But no, she said, "Quickly take it away, quickly take it away. I said I've worn that crown for 8 years, I really want to give it back but I refuse to take it back. Whoever comes, please take it, take it quickly, take it soon..."

Not only Nam Em, before that, runner-up Que Van also admitted to spending 600 million VND to buy the runner-up crown from a beauty contest. Que Van's shocking revelation on the internet, many people were both surprised but also found it normal. Rumors of beauties buying awards are actually not new. But everything is only mentioned as rumors because the information revealed has no real evidence.
Previously, the 3rd runner-up of Mrs. Vietnam Global 2022 (held in Da Nang ) sent a petition to the authorities to accuse the organizers of this contest of selling the prize. She said that she spent 800 million to get the title of 3rd runner-up. Because she did not want other contestants to fall into the same situation as her, she decided to speak up to denounce.
The crown is tied to profit
Many people in the industry acknowledge that the high awards of Vietnamese beauties in many beauty contests, from domestic to international, are all exchanged for money. The price for a crown ranges from tens of thousands of USD to millions of USD, depending on the scale of the contest. Even spending money to buy a prize for a beauty has become an investment strategy of many units. Because the crown is linked to profits (from business) and reality has also proven that many beauties become rich when owning a crown. If in the past, buying a crown was somewhat discreet and difficult, today it has become easier, even in famous beauty contests.
While Que Van readily admitted to paying for the title, many other beauties also admitted that they received offers to sell crowns from the contest organizers. The prices offered were suitable for the positions of top 10, secondary prizes, first and second runners-up, and beauty queen. As long as there was money, there would be a crown.
The success of beauty pageants is partly explained by the proliferation of beauty pageants recently. The public cannot differentiate between the pageants because there are many pageants with the same name, and to differentiate, the organizers have had to try to explain the meaning of their pageant names in English and Latin.
According to experts, the nature of beauty pageants is not condemnable, as it honors beauty and if through the contest, positive messages can be spread and the community can be called upon to participate in meaningful activities. However, when economic factors increasingly dominate the nature of contests, distorted activities will gradually take place, when business people seek fame from the contest to exploit economic value, while contest participants mainly aim for material wealth for themselves.
These distorted thoughts will lead to illusions about oneself and inappropriate statements in the media, thereby creating frustration for the community.
Need to review beauty contests
Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education , said that recently we have witnessed many scandals related to beauty contests. This is the result of lax management and organization of these contests. The number of crowned beauties is so great that few people can remember all the names of the beauty queens in a year.
Companies that organize beauty pageants may be professional in organizing events but lack sophistication in training and preparing the beauty contestants, especially those who win the crown, to take on new social responsibilities that are appropriate to the national culture.
If not organized properly and seriously, beauty pageants can have the opposite effect and contribute to the loss of value and meaning of this activity. Focusing on appearance without considering knowledge and other values in a beauty pageant can cause pressure and damage to personal image, especially for young contestants.
The organization of beauty pageants should be carried out carefully, in compliance with regulations and ethical standards, respecting common values, valuing transparency and fairness to ensure that this beauty pageant can contribute positively to the promotion of culture and tourism development.
