American veteran, Korean artist paints Uncle Ho

David Thomas (born 1946) fought in Vietnam in 1969-1970. He later returned to the peaceful , unified Vietnam as an artist. He wanted to use art to heal the wounds of the past. He completed the painting Ho Chi Minh in 1988.

In the painting, David Thomas chose to paint a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh in the final stages of his life, similar to the portrait of Uncle Ho hanging in millions of houses across Vietnam, so it is very familiar and easily moves viewers.

Besides David Thomas, many world artists have created paintings and statues to express their feelings for President Ho.

The Ho Chi Minh in Fine Arts exhibition also displays a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh by Korean artist Lee Sang Phil.

Unlike David Thomas, Mr. Lee Sang Phil chose to paint a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh when he was younger. The entire painting is dominated by Uncle Ho's resolute face and bright eyes, painted in pop art style.

The work President Ho Chi Minh and the children by To Ngoc Van

The painting of President Ho Chi Minh with children by painter To Ngoc Van (1906-1954) before 1954 was widely printed and distributed by the Resistance Culture Association.

According to the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the image of Uncle Ho with children is shown in a vertical composition, reminiscent of folk paintings often hung during Tet with the theme of Mr. Phuc, Mr. Loc or Mr. Tho surrounded by many children.

He is a thin, gentle old man, surrounded by chubby, cute babies.

The painting depicts the children's affection for Uncle Ho, and at the same time shows Uncle Ho's love for children across Vietnam, regardless of region or ethnicity.

The woodcut painting "Headwaters" by Tran Van Can (1910-1994) is also a featured work at the exhibition.

In 1970, artist Tran Van Can debuted this work. The image of Uncle Ho working at a precarious stone table next to Lenin stream, with the light of Leninism and ideology shining, leading him to the path to save the country...

The exhibition lasts until May 30 on the 1st floor of Building B, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi.
