Is drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day too much?

A Harvard study published in June that followed nearly 50,000 women for 30 years found that drinking coffee every day may help women age healthily. Drinking one to three cups a day has also been linked to heart health benefits and reduced mortality.

However, research also suggests that high coffee consumption may increase the risk of dementia. A 2022 paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found a link between high coffee consumption and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in people with high blood pressure.

The benefits, downsides, and appropriate dosage all depend on your personal lifestyle and overall health. And health experts always advise that, like most things, it's important to drink coffee in moderation every day.

Keep your caffeine intake to 400mg per day or less.

Deepak Chopra, a speaker and alternative medicine advocate, told CNBC Make It that he drinks two to three cups of coffee a day before noon. While that may sound like a lot of caffeine for the average person, it's actually within the healthy range.

“Drinking two to three cups of coffee before noon is safe, as long as they don't exceed 400mg of caffeine,” says nutritionist Roxana Ehsani.

Ehsani's advice follows the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recommendation of consuming no more than 400mg of caffeine per day, which includes caffeine found in tea, energy drinks, soda and chocolate.

Advice from the experts

It is important to consider your personal experience. Some people may benefit from consuming much less caffeine than the FDA recommends.

Caffeine tolerance varies from person to person, with some people feeling anxious or jittery with just 1-2 cups of coffee.

“Within the recommended range of milligrams or a cup of coffee, if you start to feel too tired and the caffeine isn't working, then you have to stop. If your heart starts to race really fast, then you have to stop. Everyone's body is different,” nutritionist Jessica Sylvester told NBC News .

Pregnant women should consider cutting back on caffeine, adds Mayo Clinic nutritionist Nikki Cota. People with diabetes or heart disease should be mindful of their sugar intake when drinking coffee.

Experts also differ on whether teens should drink coffee, but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, avoiding caffeine is the best choice for all kids.

For everyone else, experts advise that if you drink 2-3 cups of coffee or more, pay attention to how you feel and make sure you don't replace a meal with caffeine. You should drink water or eat before drinking coffee because caffeine reduces appetite.

And if you find that your sleep suffers when you drink coffee in the afternoon, experts recommend sticking to your latte or macchiato in the morning.

Similarly, Dr. Phung Tuan Giang, President of the Vietnam Institute for Research and Development of Traditional Medicine, said that coffee seems to be a double-edged sword. It can make us feel more alert, productive and motivated.

However, for some people, it has the opposite effect, leaving them feeling anxious, restless and unable to concentrate.

In fact, coffee is also rich in antioxidants and contains small amounts of several micronutrients that our bodies need.

"In moderation, most people can safely enjoy coffee as part of a healthy diet. However, there are some people who should not consume caffeine," Dr. Giang noted.

For example, children are advised to avoid drinking coffee as it can affect growth and development. Coffee can cause insomnia, so people with insomnia should limit their consumption, especially in the evening.

Pregnant women should also limit their caffeine intake to less than 200mg per day. You should also not drink more than 500mg of caffeine per day, which is about 5 cups of regular coffee.

So , experts agree that as long as you don't experience any unpleasant side effects and you drink it in moderation, coffee is a perfectly fine beverage to enjoy…
