These schools come from 115 countries and territories, reflecting the strong expansion and internationalization of global higher education .
The United States continues to lead the way with 171 universities represented, while India is second with 128. Japan, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye round out the top five, each with more than 100 institutions.
Notably, Libya, Senegal and Yemen are named for the first time with a participating university. THE believes that this increase demonstrates the increasing research capacity and international integration of universities around the world .
According to the announcement, educational institutions are evaluated based on 18 criteria in 5 main groups: Teaching, Research environment, Research quality, Technology transfer and Internationalization level.
Of these, research quality accounts for the largest proportion. To be eligible, schools must provide undergraduate training, conduct multidisciplinary research, and publish at least 1,000 papers between 2020 and 2024.
Last year, Oxford University retained its top spot for the ninth consecutive year, followed by MIT. The top 10 is still dominated by the US and UK. Vietnam has nine schools, led by the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City in the 501-600 group.
