The famous newspaper of the American television channel CNN has just published an article related to the 4.1 million VND gold-plated pho bowl inside the Vinpearl Landmark 81 building (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City). According to CNN, the pho here is enjoyed with soft ribs and high-quality ingredients such as Wagyu beef, foie gras, truffle mushrooms and covered with a layer of edible gold leaf.

The price of a bowl is therefore also astonishing: 170 USD (4.1 million VND). And only five bowls are served daily.

"Pho is Vietnam's national dish, enjoyed everywhere, at any time of the day... and I wanted to pay homage to pho with this luxurious new version," Le Trung, executive chef of Oriental Pearl restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, told CNN.

The restaurant is located at Vinpear Landmark81, home to Autograph Collection - the tallest hotel in the country.

Although the special pho uses high-quality imported ingredients, it is still cooked the traditional way: lightly simmering bone marrow, rich oxtail, chicken and short ribs marinated with spices like cinnamon and star anise for two days, creating "a wonderfully rich, deep flavor," Mr. Trung said.

“Traditionally, pho is not considered a high-class dish, but we have tried to elevate it to make this version rich and flavorful,” said Trung, adding that the addition of gold leaf was to “enhance the aesthetics of the dish…, so that it does not simply look like a regular bowl of pho.”

Pho is arguably one of Vietnam's most famous dishes, eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner; widely served across the country in homes, street stalls and restaurants.

Pho is loved the world over. At its most basic, it consists of rice noodles in a beef or sometimes chicken broth, garnished with herbs and thinly sliced ​​meat.

A bowl of pho costs 4.1 million VND

Served in alleys and street corners in Vietnam's cities, a typical bowl of pho costs between $1.50 and $3.

However, Oriental Pearl's gold-plated bowl of pho will cost you at least 50 times more.

Chef Trung believes his dish is the most exciting bowl of pho in the world. “We want to elevate this classic dish to a new level of elegance and sophistication, while pushing the boundaries of Vietnamese cuisine,” he says.

However, this isn’t the only expensive bowl of pho in Ho Chi Minh City. Michelin-starred Anan Saigon offers a high-end pho dish using unique ingredients like caviar, Japanese sake, jellyfish and slices of sturgeon – priced at $100.
