Protecting water resources - everyone's responsibility

World Water Day was first held on March 22, 1993, initiated by the United Nations to raise global awareness of the importance of clean water and encourage specific actions to protect and use water resources effectively.

Realizing the importance of water resources for daily life and production, the work of ensuring water security and safety of dams and reservoirs has always received attention, leadership and direction from Party committees, authorities, departments and functional branches in our province.

Water plays an important role in agricultural production.

Closely following the Central's instructions and based on the local practical situation, our province has issued many programs and plans, setting out specific goals and solutions for this work. In particular, on December 12, 2022, the Provincial Party Standing Committee issued Plan No. 76-KH/TU on implementing Conclusion No. 36-KL/TW of the Politburo on ensuring water security and safety of dams and reservoirs until 2030, with a vision to 2045. On July 28, 2023, the Provincial People's Committee issued Plan No. 2432/KH-UBND to implement the Program on strengthening environmental protection, food safety and rural clean water supply in new rural construction in Kon Tum province for the period 2021-2025. On December 23, 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued Official Dispatch No. 4612/UBND-NNTN to promote the implementation of plan 2432/KH-UBND.

The water infrastructure system has been gradually invested in and built, and water exploitation and use activities have been focused on. The province currently has 595 irrigation works, including 86 reservoirs, 7 electric pumping stations and 502 dams, basically meeting the irrigation water requirements for agricultural production in the province. The whole province has more than 200 domestic water supply works concentrated in residential areas and many small-scale water supply works are being effectively exploited, ensuring domestic water supply for the majority of people.

Propaganda and mobilization work to raise people's awareness and consciousness in managing and using water resources effectively has been promoted.

Many irrigation works in the province have run out of water.

Statistics from the relevant authorities show that the rate of households in our province using hygienic water is over 93%. Of which, the rate of households using hygienic water from centralized water supply works is 31.5%; the rate of households using hygienic water from small water supply works is 61.5%.

However, in addition to the achieved results, the reality shows that the exploitation and management of water resources and the work of ensuring the safety of dams and reservoirs are sometimes and in some places limited, making the water source for production, irrigation and daily life not guaranteed. The situation of water pollution and environmental pollution from wastewater from some production facilities and domestic wastewater in residential areas still occurs. A part of the population has not raised awareness of using water economically.

Our province is in the peak of the dry season, drought has occurred in many places causing more than 380 hectares of crops to lack irrigation water. Looking at the dry dams and cracked fields, we see more clearly the importance of water. It is not only the source of life for people but also an important factor for agricultural production - the main economic sector of the province.

The climate is increasingly harsh, the heat is intense and prolonged, fresh water resources are increasingly depleted and scarce. The protection, economical and efficient use of water resources is becoming more urgent. This is the responsibility of all levels, sectors, the whole community, and first of all, of each individual with the most practical and concrete actions.
