CNN reported on June 27 that the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office (Texas, USA) said that a ground worker at San Antonio International Airport was sucked into a plane engine and died by suicide.
The cause of death in the June 23 incident was determined to be the impact of blunt and sharp objects. The victim is believed to have committed suicide, according to an office assistant.
Delta Air Lines flight 1111 from Los Angeles, California, to San Antonio, Texas, was taxiing to its destination when a ground crew member was sucked into the engine in the incident that occurred at approximately 10:25 p.m.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is gathering relevant information, while airport authorities are coordinating with the investigating agency.
The unidentified employee worked for Unifi Aviation, a company contracted by Delta Airlines to handle ground crew operations.
Delta Airlines said in a statement to KENS5 that the company was "deeply saddened" by the incident and "is cooperating with authorities as they begin their investigation."
Unifi Aviation said the incident was a "tragic accident." "Our initial investigation indicates this incident was unrelated to Unifi's operating procedures, safety, and policies," the company said.
On June 21, Piedmont Airlines (USA) was fined $15,625 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in connection with the death of a ground staff member last year in a similar incident.
“Proper training and enforcement of safety procedures could have prevented this tragedy,” an OSHA official said.
