On April 11, information from the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that doctors from the Department of Orthopedic and Spinal Surgery of the Hospital had just received a patient seriously injured by a dog bite.

Specifically, a 68-year-old female patient (Dong Anh, Hanoi ) was attacked by a neighbor's dog. According to her family, while the patient was sweeping the alley, the neighbor's dog (over 20 kg) suddenly attacked her. The dog was so ferocious that it continuously bit her face, arms, and legs. In particular, her face was severely injured.

The family took her to a nearby medical facility for first aid, then the patient was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for surgery.

Dr. Vu Giang An - Department of Orthopedics, Neurology and Spine - who directly received and operated on the patient said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with a dog bite on the face. All the wounds were open and bleeding profusely. In the mouth area, the entire lower lip was torn and connected to the oral cavity. In the eye area, there was a wound on the lower eyelid of the left eye that tore down to the nostril, exposing the bone.

Because the wound was so large, the doctors had to stitch it with nearly 70 stitches. These wounds were at a very high risk of infection, so during the procedure, the doctors had to be extremely careful and meticulous in cutting, cleaning, and avoiding infection.

Currently, after surgery, the patient is stable and has been instructed to receive tetanus vaccination, rabies vaccination and anti-rabies serum.

According to Doctor Tran Quang Dai, Vaccination Consulting Department - Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, in the above patient's case, because the wound is on the face, in addition to tetanus vaccination, the patient needs to be fully vaccinated against rabies, both vaccine and anti-rabies serum.

Also according to Dr. Dai, recently, the Hospital's Vaccination Consultation Room has received many cases of rabies vaccination due to bites from dogs, cats, and wild animals.

On the morning of April 9, 2024, at Kim Chung facility, 20 people came to get rabies vaccination and 5 cases were injected with anti-rabies serum. Therefore, to avoid unfortunate cases, experts recommend that when bitten by a dog, people should go to a medical facility for first aid, cleaning, disinfecting the wound and consulting on rabies vaccination. Especially, get rabies vaccination as soon as possible.

If people are bitten by dogs in areas such as the head, face, neck, genitals, hands, feet, or in cases of multiple trauma with large, deep wounds, they must immediately get rabies vaccination, with full rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum.

According to doctors, the hot summer is the time when infectious diseases can break out, especially rabies. Therefore, people should not be subjective, households with dogs should have their dogs fully vaccinated. If dogs go outside, they should be muzzled to prevent disease in the community.
