Male patient in Hanoi bleeding profusely after being slashed by a flying device

(Dan Tri) - A 43-year-old male patient in Hanoi was taken to E Hospital for emergency treatment due to massive bleeding after being slashed multiple times in the buttocks by the propeller of an agricultural drone.

On June 27, E Hospital informed about a special trauma case that was just treated at the hospital.

Accordingly, a 43-year-old male patient in Hanoi was piloting an agricultural drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) to spray pesticides when he had an accident, causing the propeller of the device to repeatedly slash both sides of his buttocks, leading to massive bleeding and pain, and had to be taken to the hospital by his family for emergency treatment.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with severe blood loss, with many large, jagged wounds on both buttocks, signs of having been repeatedly slashed by the fan blades...

The male patient said that while operating the remote-controlled pesticide sprayer, the device suddenly malfunctioned and could not fly as high as usual even though the fan blades were still spinning.

Instead of stopping the device remotely or waiting for the fan to stop completely, he subjectively approached with the intention of removing the battery to check. When he bent down to operate, the fan, which was still operating at high speed, suddenly slashed repeatedly into his buttocks, causing many deep lacerations on both sides and profuse bleeding.

BSCKII Kieu Quoc Hien - Head of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Department, E Hospital said that this was the first time he received a case of injury caused by a remote-controlled aircraft.

Doctors quickly made a clinical assessment, performed temporary hemostasis, and disinfected the wound to prevent the risk of infection.

With a complicated wound, large in size, the left side measuring 6x9cm, the right side measuring 6x10cm, the patient was quickly transferred straight to the emergency operating room, to avoid life-threatening hemorrhagic shock or infection.

Dr. Hien said that the doctors cleaned the crushed tissue, continuously irrigated the wound area, removed necrotic tissue, checked for vascular and nerve damage, and performed multi-layered sutures. Thanks to timely treatment, the patient's health is now stable and is being monitored and cared for post-operatively.

"The patient was very lucky that although the cuts were wide, they did not damage the important nerves in the buttocks area. If the direction of the cut had been deviated by just 1-2 cm downwards, the fan blade could have cut the sciatic nerve - the largest and most important nerve that controls sensation and movement of the entire lower limb.

If the sciatic nerve is severed, the patient may face partial or complete paralysis of the leg, seriously affecting the patient's ability to walk and recover.

If the wound is displaced upwards, the risk of severing the superior gluteal nerve is also very high, leading to complications such as abnormal gait, weak gluteal muscles and loss of body balance during movement," Dr. Hien informed.

According to Dr. Hien, remote control devices, especially drones, are increasingly being used in agriculture, helping farmers save time, effort and improve labor efficiency.

However, if not operated properly, these devices also pose a serious accident risk.

With high operating capacity, the fan blade rotation speed can reach thousands of revolutions per minute, creating a very strong cutting force, enough to cause serious damage to soft tissues, and can even rupture tendons and muscles if in close contact.

Therefore, when using drones in agriculture, people need to strictly follow safety instructions, especially not approaching the device when it is not completely turned off.
