Ministry of Education and Training: School counselors must support students' psychological problems

(Dan Tri) - According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the principle of school counseling work must be to put the learner at the center and not discriminate in order to support students' psychological problems.

This content is mentioned in Circular No. 18/2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training on guidance on school counseling and social work that has just been issued.

According to the Circular, the purpose of school counseling and social work is to improve learners' capacity to prevent, identify difficulties, resolve and seek help to overcome difficulties in learning, psychology and social relationships.

In addition, it is necessary to practice life skills, form appropriate attitudes in social relationships, contribute to perfecting learners' personalities; strengthen coordination between schools, families, society and related organizations.

The Circular specifies the content of school counseling and social work in schools, including many important areas, closely linked to the practical needs of learners regarding learning, gender, social relationships, psychology, life skills, career guidance, etc.

In principle, this activity ensures the rights, safety and security of information; the right to voluntary participation and self-determination of learners.

Learners are the center, no discrimination; ensuring equality, objectivity, and standards between learners and those performing school counseling and social work.

Focus on strengths, respect the characteristics and personal circumstances of students; ensure timely implementation when students encounter difficulties and need counseling.

Counseling work supports students' psychological problems such as prevention, screening, early detection, and response to students' psychological difficulties; psychological counseling and consultation for students with psychological difficulties; connection to psychological services when necessary...

In particular, for learners who have difficulties or needs beyond the school's capacity, it is necessary to coordinate with families to connect facilities, experts providing school counseling services, and professional social work to support learners.

The Circular also requires schools to arrange school counseling and social work rooms that ensure privacy, quietness, ease of access, and suitability for organizing counseling activities.
