According to sources, the US Department of Commerce sent an email to a number of employees about government- issued devices stating: "To keep Commerce's information systems secure, access to China-based DeepSeek AI is strictly prohibited on all government-issued devices. Do not download, view, or access any DeepSeek-related apps, desktop applications, or websites."

The US Department of Commerce officially banned the use of DeepSeek on government equipment.

DeepSeek's low-cost AI models sparked a major sell-off in global stock markets in January, as investors worried about a threat to America's leadership in artificial intelligence (AI).

US officials and members of Congress have expressed concern about the threat DeepSeek poses to data privacy and sensitive government information. Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Darin LaHood, members of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, introduced a bill in February to ban DeepSeek from government devices. Earlier this month, they sent a letter to US governors, calling for a ban on the Chinese AI application on state-issued devices.

"By using DeepSeek, users are unwittingly sharing sensitive and proprietary information with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – such as contracts, documents, and financial records. In the wrong hands, this data is a huge asset to the CCP, a known foreign adversary," the lawmakers' letter to the authorities on March 3 said.

Several US states have banned the model on government devices, including Virginia, Texas and New York, while a coalition of 21 state attorneys general has called on Congress to pass a nationwide ban.
