Father died, 2 children in critical condition after drinking alcohol

On May 12, speaking to reporters, Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Head of the Food Safety Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City, said that this unit has determined the initial cause of the death of 3 father and son living in District 12 after a drinking party.

According to the initial investigation results of the Food Safety Management Board (FSB), on May 1, Mr. Nguyen Van T. (72 years old) and his two children, Nguyen Van A. (46 years old); Nguyen Van Q. (36 years old) organized a drinking party at home.

Mr. T’s family members drank homemade wine with many kinds of roots and medicinal herbs. A neighbor also joined the party, but this person did not drink alcohol.

Recently, in Ho Chi Minh City, there have been many poisoning cases related to methanol alcohol.

A day later, all three of Mr. T. and his children were taken to the 175 Military Hospital for emergency treatment with signs of poisoning. Doctors tried their best to save him, but Mr. T.'s condition worsened and he died. His two children, who received intensive treatment, are now out of danger.

According to Ms. Phong Lan, the Food Safety Board continues to coordinate with local authorities to investigate the area to promptly detect and prevent wine mixed with industrial alcohol. However, it is very difficult to determine the specific origin of the wine as well as the types of roots and medicinal herbs the victim used because the wine and medicinal herbs may have been purchased and soaked a long time ago.

Regarding the above incident, Major, Doctor Duong Xuan Minh, Department of Blood Filtration, Military Hospital 175, who directly treated the above patients, said that at the time of admission, the patients showed signs of fatigue, headache, severe vomiting, and visual disturbances. The results of examination and testing showed multiple organ dysfunction, especially severe metabolic acidosis, increased anion gap, and increased blood osmotic pressure gap. The patients were diagnosed with methanol poisoning - a type of industrial alcohol, which is highly toxic when entering the body.
