The torrential rain started on the night of September 22 and lasted until the morning of September 23, submerging many areas of the city, seriously affecting traffic and daily activities.
Floodwaters inundated roads and residential areas, leaving vehicles stranded for hours in knee-deep or waist-deep water at major intersections. Suburban train and subway services were also affected. In many low-lying areas, water entered homes, causing damage to many structures.
Rains also affected operations at Kolkata airport. According to reports, over 100 flights were affected, of which 62 were cancelled and 42 others were delayed.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said 251.4 mm of rain fell in less than 24 hours. This is the highest since 1986 and the sixth heaviest single-day rainfall in 137 years. The heavy rain was caused by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, according to the IMD.
