Mass food poisoning outbreaks involving Salmonella and Psilocin toxins

On April 5, the Quang Ngai Department of Health said that through testing samples, the unit determined that the cause of food poisoning cases that hospitalized many local residents was Salmonella bacteria and Psilocin toxin.

The number of candies used by students of Hanh Tin Tay Secondary School and showed signs of poisoning.

Specifically, the food poisoning incident after eating bread in Son Ha district on March 10, caused many students to be hospitalized for treatment of the cause of poisoning due to infection with Salmonella microorganisms (intestinal bacteria that do not form spores, mainly move by flagella around the body).

Regarding the food poisoning case after eating mushrooms in Son Long commune, Son Tay district on March 12, the cause of poisoning was the toxin Psilocin (a hallucinogenic toxin) in mushrooms.

Regarding the mass poisoning case after eating candy in Nghia Hanh district, the Department of Health assigned the Provincial Center for Disease Control to coordinate with the Food Safety and Hygiene Department to send candy samples to the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute to test for indicators related to food safety.

The Department of Health of Quang Ngai requested the Nghia Hanh District Medical Center to report in detail the cluster of 30 students hospitalized with suspected food poisoning after eating candy (including disease progression, clinical, paraclinical, diagnosis, treatment...).

Quang Ngai Provincial Department of Health requires localities to promptly report food poisoning incidents to the Department of Health and the Food Safety and Hygiene Department for timely handling and direction.

Previously, as reported, in March, in many places in Quang Ngai, people showed symptoms of vomiting, fatigue and were hospitalized. The patients were determined to be poisoned after consuming various types of food.

Most recently, on March 28, nearly 30 students of Hanh Tin Tay Secondary School, Nghia Hanh District bought candy from a store in front of the school gate. Immediately after, this group of students showed signs of food poisoning such as: stomachache, nausea, fatigue, so people took them to Nghia Hanh District Medical Center for health check-up and monitoring.
