Accordingly, the current health insurance card has 10 characters, instead of 15 characters as before. The health insurance card also integrates many lookup information.

In addition, from June 1, the social insurance sector has not issued paper health insurance cards to participants, but requires the use of health insurance cards on digital platforms VssID and VNeID. Issuing paper health insurance cards only applies to those who cannot install the VssID and VNeID applications and do not have a citizen identification card with a chip.

Therefore, people can look up card information on VssID or VNeID.

How to identify health insurance information

According to social insurance regulations, the benefit levels of health insurance participants continue to be symbolized by characters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Corresponding to each character, health insurance participants will have their medical examination and treatment costs paid by the health insurance fund at the following levels:

- Symbol number 1: 100% of medical examination and treatment costs within the scope of health insurance payment are paid and there is no limit on the payment rate for some drugs, chemicals, medical supplies and technical services according to the regulations of the Minister of Health on the list, rate and conditions of payment for technical services .

Cost of transporting patients from district level to higher level in emergency cases or when inpatient treatment requires technical transfer.

- Symbol number 2: 100% of medical examination and treatment costs covered by health insurance are paid (with a limit on the payment rate for some medicines, chemicals, medical supplies and technical services as prescribed by the Minister of Health).

- Symbol number 4: The health insurance fund pays 80% of the medical examination and treatment costs within the scope of health insurance payment (with a limit on the payment rate for some drugs, chemicals, medical supplies and technical services according to regulations of the Minister of Health); 100% of the medical examination and treatment costs at the commune level and the cost for one medical examination and treatment is lower than 15% of the basic monthly salary.

- Symbol number 5: 100% of medical examination and treatment costs are paid by the health insurance fund, including medical examination and treatment costs outside the scope of health insurance ; transportation costs.

In addition to identifying the benefit level by the characters on the health insurance card, health insurance participants can also directly look up their benefit level on the Vietnam Social Security system through the Vietnam Social Security link.

To look up, the person with a health insurance card must enter all required information to receive information about the benefit level and related information.

For example: Full name: Nguyen Thi A, Date of birth..., Card validity: From January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025.

Health insurance card code shows area of ​​residence

Besides the symbol number, the health insurance card will display a code of the place of residence consisting of 2 characters: K1/K2/K3

Specifically, the symbol K1 is the code for ethnic minorities and people from poor households participating in health insurance , living in areas with difficult socio-economic conditions according to the provisions of law.

Symbol K3 is the code of the place where the health insurance participant is living in the island commune or island district according to the provisions of law.

Based on the new health insurance card, it is possible to identify health insurance participants through the card code. It is possible to determine the level of health insurance benefits and the place of residence of the cardholder.
