Mrs. Nguyen Thi Nguyet's family (Yen Du village, Mai Hoa commune) has more than 2 hectares of Hanoi oranges grown according to VietGAP standards. At this time, the entire orange area is entering the stage of segment development and sweetness, expected to be harvested in the main season in about 1 - 1.5 months. This year, orange productivity has increased by 20 - 30%, promising to bring a good income for the family.

Ms. Nguyet shared: “Through initial assessment, more than 95% of the fruit is of good quality, free from pests and diseases, and is expected to yield nearly 25 tons, 2-3 tons higher than previous years. At this time, oranges are entering a period of strong growth in size and quality. To help the fruit form peel pigment, create beautiful color and have ideal sweetness, my family focuses on care, pruning, irrigation and strict pest management.”
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Mai Hoa commune, there are currently 530 hectares of orange trees in the area, of which 490 hectares are for production. "Although unfavorable weather has affected the development of orange trees. In addition, some areas have decreased due to orange degeneration and aging, but for the areas that are being harvested, oranges are still developing and growing well. This year's orange output is estimated at about 6,300 tons" - Mr. Vo Dinh Thong, Head of the Economic - Infrastructure Department (Mai Hoa commune) said.
In Dong Loc commune, these days, people are also focusing on taking care of hundreds of hectares of oranges, lemons and crispy oranges, expected to start harvesting from early October until Lunar New Year.
Ms. Phan Thi Hien - Hien Thanh Orange Cooperative (Anh Hung village, Dong Loc commune) said: “My family has nearly 3 hectares of oranges with about 1,300 trees, of which the area of crispy oranges accounts for about 2/3, the rest is lemon oranges. Thanks to the application of appropriate fertilization techniques and the experience gained over many years, this year's orange output is expected to grow quite well, estimated at about 65 tons, an increase of 10-12 tons compared to last season. Currently, we are focusing on care during the sweetening stage, this is an important stage that determines the quality and marketability of oranges.”

Along with Mai Hoa and Dong Loc, many communes in Ha Tinh such as Vu Quang, Kim Hoa, Thach Xuan... are also focusing on taking care of orange growing areas in the development stage. Through initial assessments, orange output in localities is forecast to grow, such as: Vu Quang commune has nearly 700 hectares of oranges, with an estimated output of more than 7,000 tons, an increase of more than 1,000 tons compared to last year; Kim Hoa commune has an area of nearly 1,200 hectares, with an estimated output of 14,600 tons, an increase of 150 tons compared to last year... Some gardens have been deposited early by traders to ensure market supply.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan - a fruit vendor on Xuan Dieu Street, Thanh Sen Ward said: "Ha Tinh oranges are famous for their characteristic sweet and aromatic taste. Usually, from October to Lunar New Year, the demand for consumption will be very high. At this time, we are conducting a survey of gardeners to make deposits and secure orders. This year, despite the impact of storms, the orange areas are well cared for by the people, with beautiful appearance. The selling price is expected to be stable at 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg when entering the main season."

According to statistics from the Ha Tinh Department of Crop Production and Livestock, the province currently has nearly 7,400 hectares of oranges, of which over 6,200 hectares are for harvest. Experts recommend that when the harvest is near, people need to focus on monitoring the growth process of the trees, managing the amount of irrigation water and fertilizer appropriately to increase the quality and color of the fruit.
In addition, people need to monitor and prevent pests such as red spiders, mealybugs, etc. by biological measures; regularly keep the garden clean of weeds, cover the base with dry grass and straw to maintain humidity and limit the emergence of pathogens. When the oranges are about 1/3 - 1/4 of the peel area, they can be harvested, preferably on sunny days to ensure fruit quality and convenience in consumption.
