Currently, the construction materials industry is facing many major challenges. Experts say that comprehensive solutions are needed to overcome difficulties for this industry.

The country's important industry

On the morning of November 9, at the workshop "Developing the modern and sustainable construction materials industry in Vietnam", Master Le Van Toi - Vice President of the Vietnam Construction Materials Association gave a speech, in which he clearly stated the importance of this industry to the socio -economic development of the country. In addition, he also proposed many recommendations and solutions to promote the modern and sustainable development of the construction materials industry.

Assessing the great contribution of the construction materials industry, Master Le Van Toi said: " Since its establishment in 1958, our country's construction industry has identified construction materials as an important field. However, due to war and inappropriate mechanisms, this field has not been developed for many years. Until the innovation policy, along with the development of science and technology, the construction materials field can be said to have taken off and become a developed production industry, making an important contribution to the development of the country ".

After nearly 40 years of innovation, the construction materials manufacturing industry has made breakthrough developments in all fields, making an important contribution to the cause of national construction and development.

That is, the output and quality of construction material products are constantly improved; many new, advanced technologies and modern equipment on par with the world and the region are invested; the staff with technical expertise, economic management and marketing is constantly increasing; small-scale, fragmented, backward production causing environmental pollution is gradually replaced by advanced, synchronous technological lines... changing the face of the construction material production industry.

Vietnam's construction materials have gone from not being able to meet domestic demand to being able to meet domestic consumption demand and having surplus for export. Responsibility for reducing polluting emissions, saving resources, and developing environmentally friendly construction materials has been raised and a number of solutions and sanctions have been implemented.

It can be seen that in the period 1986 - 2009, supply did not meet demand, but from 2010 to now, supply has exceeded demand and the State has issued many strong policies to increase clean production and produce environmentally friendly construction materials.

A typical achievement was that in 2010, for the first time, Vietnam produced enough cement to meet domestic consumption needs and initially exported. The country imported 1 million tons of clinker in the Southern region and exported 1.2 million tons of cement products (including cement and clinker) in the Northern region.

However, the Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Building Materials frankly admitted the difficulties that this industry is facing. " From 2023 to now, in the face of the world situation with many "prolonged risks and instabilities" (stated in the United Nations World Economic Situation Report 2023); the real estate market nationwide is quiet; raw material prices are high; the production and consumption of construction materials are facing difficulties. Many businesses have had to stop all or part of their production facilities, sustained losses, and bad debt is increasing. Confidence in the macro economy and the industry economy is at an alarming level. Businesses must brace themselves to overcome this difficult time ," Mr. Toi said.

Many recommendations and solutions were given.

To solve the difficulties for the construction materials industry, helping this industry develop modernly and sustainably, the representative of the Vietnam Construction Materials Association, Master Le Van Toi, has proposed many recommendations. Specifically as follows:

To overcome the current difficulties, Mr. Toi said that the Government needs to continue implementing policies to reduce loan interest rates and support businesses in reducing financial costs. At the same time, it is necessary to reduce export tax rates for construction materials such as cement clinker and natural stone tiles to encourage exports. In addition, increasing the disbursement of public investment capital will help stimulate demand for construction materials.

In the long term, the Government needs to maintain and strengthen policies to encourage and support businesses in transferring new technologies, investing in modern production lines as well as improving technology. In addition, it is necessary to promote the use of environmentally friendly construction materials, encourage the use of household waste as alternative fuel for the production of construction materials. In particular, the Ministry of Construction needs to study and propose a mechanism to prioritize the use of artificial sand in construction works, and have a plan for mineral areas to make artificial sand.

On the part of the Vietnam Construction Association, it is necessary to strengthen the connection between associations in the construction materials industry to promote cooperation, exchange and information sharing. In addition, the Association needs to guide, encourage and support investors, designers and construction contractors to use environmentally friendly construction materials.

For construction material manufacturing enterprises, to cope with existing challenges, it is necessary to focus on market forecasting and seizing opportunities, responding flexibly to fluctuations; focusing on product quality, diversifying products to increase competitiveness. Practicing thrift, finding new markets and enhancing trade promotion are also important measures.

In the long term, businesses need to restructure to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness. Invest in technology to automate production and improve productivity. Cooperate with domestic and foreign partners to share technology and resources. Strengthen internal solidarity to build collective strength, cope with challenges and promote industry development.

The Vietnam Association of Building Materials will further enhance its role in participating in perfecting policies for building materials development as well as areas related to building materials development; closely cooperate with the Vietnam Construction Association, relevant associations and unions; work side by side with businesses in the industry to actively contribute to removing difficulties, promoting the country's building materials industry as well as building materials businesses to develop sustainably.

" We are proud of the progress of the construction materials manufacturing industry. Each construction materials manufacturing enterprise has made common contributions and above all, has made efforts to overcome all difficulties. With our capacity and experience, enhanced cooperation, promoted creativity, and a spirit of progress, we will certainly achieve good results and contribute more and more to the cause of building and protecting the country, " affirmed the Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Construction Materials.
