At a store on Pham Van Dong Street (Thu Duc City), in addition to the usual fruits and lemons, the store owner also imports Guangdong lemons. “These lemons are imported from the wholesale market, retail price is 50,000 VND/kg, every day I sell about 10-15kg because many people are looking for these lemons to make hand-pounded lemon tea” - said Ms. Ngoc Lan, the store owner.
Recorded at some traditional markets such as Ba Chieu market (Binh Thanh district), Thu Duc market (Thu Duc city)..., this type of lemon is wrapped in plastic, the fruit is large, the outer skin is thick, rough, has a mild sour taste... The selling price of this type of lemon ranges from 50,000-70,000 VND/kg. This price is 2-3 times higher than that of common lemons grown in Vietnam.
On social networking sites, Guangdong lemons are also being advertised and sold by the crate at wholesale prices of 25,000-35,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Dang Hung, a trader at Thu Duc wholesale market, when hand-pounded lemon tea is "hot", the price of lemon can reach 90,000-100,000 VND/kg due to scarcity. "Currently, there are quite a lot of Guangdong lemons coming to the market so the selling price has also decreased. Before, I sold 60-80 kg per day, but now it is about 30-40 kg/day" - Mr. Hung said.
A representative of Thu Duc wholesale market said that in recent days, a lot of Guangdong (China) lemons have been arriving at the market in refrigerated containers, an average of about 12 tons per night.
Hand-pounded lemon tea is a drink that has emerged as a trend among young people and was imported from China. When it first appeared in Ho Chi Minh City, this drink made many young people wait in line for hours to enjoy it.
Previously, drinks such as soursop tea, salted coffee... also caused a fever in the HCMC market and pushed up the prices of raw materials.
