Never eat these 5 foods when you have braces

Wearing braces is often the first step to getting the smile you want, and for some people, it's the only step necessary to get lovely straight teeth.

Now imagine going to all that effort and then accidentally making your teeth worse by eating cavity-causing foods.
A good oral hygiene routine can virtually eliminate the risk of tooth decay, but you need to avoid the following foods to ensure your braces don't do more harm than good to your teeth, according to the Food Eat Safe news site.

1. Sticky and hard candy

There are two reasons for this warning. First, candy can get caught in your braces and damage them. Second, and perhaps more importantly, candy will stick to your teeth and linger, increasing your risk of cavities as it works its way under your braces and making it harder to clean your teeth.

2. Hard seeds

Nuts are among the worst things to eat for braces because they are hard and small. They can damage the brackets on your braces, forcing you to go to the dentist to fix them. You can always substitute nut butters if you crave the flavor and need some extra protein and healthy fats from nuts.

3. Popcorn

This seemingly harmless food can actually be a pain for braces wearers. Unpopped corn kernels and small pieces of “stubborn” corn can cause a myriad of problems, the worst of which is when they get stuck in hard-to-reach areas of your gums. This can lead to your braces having to be removed to get the kernels out and then reattached, according to Food Eat Safe .
If you really can't help yourself from popcorn, avoid the caramel kind and be sure to strain out any stubborn kernels.

4. Chewing gum

Perhaps even worse than popcorn, chewing gum should be a no-no for anyone with braces. The reason is that chewing gum can cause the wires between the brackets to bend. This problem can be so subtle that you don’t even notice it, which means your teeth are being pushed in the wrong direction and can lead to you needing to wear braces for longer to repair the damage you’ve done.

5. Ice

Chewing on ice is one of the biggest culprits for cracked teeth, with or without braces. And with braces, there's a risk of the crack occurring underneath the braces and going unnoticed until the braces are removed, or the tooth breaking off altogether.
Of course, there's also the risk of breaking the brackets on your braces, as with any hard food, according to Food Eat Safe .
